Book Reviews of The Third Jesus: The Christ We Cannot IgnoreBook Review: Chopra addresses Christians for the first time Summary: 5 Stars
You could say that this book is aimed at the silent majority of Christians, those believers who cannot stomach how their faith has headed since the rise of right-wing fundamentalism. With quiet sincerity Chopra wants to "redeem the redeemer," in the hopes that Jesus, after all these years, can still serve as a guide to the Kingdom of God. In this case, the Kingdom is within -- Chopra has connected with Christianity's long tradition of inward, mystical, and meditative worship. Thus he brings Jesus into an overall world tradition that embraces Eastern approaches like Buddhism while for the first time giving us texts from the New Testament to support his argument.
I won't say that everyone will agree with Chopra's approach. Unanimity isn't possible in such a contentious field. But it's a welcome event when a major spiritual teacher turns his mind for the first time to Christianity, which after all is the mainstream belief system in this country. HIs new book should appeal to his many fans as well as to those who have wrongly pigeon-holed Chopra as strictly an Indian or New Age phenomenon.
Book Review: The Third Jesus by Deepak Chopra Summary: 5 Stars
This book will give great insight to the one who is on a spiritual journey and truly wants to understand and live the message Jesus taught.
Deepak Chopra has a way with explaining the teachings of Jesus as they were intended and backs it up with many valid resources. Even if you totally disagree with Chopra, the book will certainly provide spiritual challenges that will have you thinking from another perspective. Isn't this exactly what Jesus was doing in his own time on this earth? Many people from his (Jesus's) own faith rejected him and his teachings because they were too rigid in their own beliefs, and made no room for further enlightenment. We are continually called to grow in spirit, faith, knowledge, and most of all, compassionate love towards one another. It is when we live according to the message Jesus declared, that we deepen our kinship with God. No one who calls themself a Christian can deny that we must be open to the spirit of God when it is speaking to us. This is truly a remarkable book.
Book Review: Good job. Summary: 5 Stars
Rock on, Deepak!
Good to know I'm not the only one distressed by the hypocracies of fundamentalists. Thank you for being the one to step up to the plate, for challenging the views of these people who commit private and global atrocities in the name of (their version) of "the Lord".
To be fair, though, extreme fundamentalism in all facets of the religious spectrum, all around the world, is guilty of such strife, misery, hatred, and fear-mongering . . . it's not Just the Christians.
Whether a person takes their inspiration from Jesus or Buddha or Allah or Krishna or even John Lennon's "Imagine", the world could certainly be a much more peaceful and joyful place, if only more humans could learn to live a love-based life.
I hope that this exposure will cause all who read it, regardless of their religious persuasion, to seriously consider what the world could be like if we would only practice from a place of unconditional love, or at the very least strive to do so.
Book Review: far reaching and profound Summary: 5 Stars
This is a profound revisioning of Jesus, which takes Him beyond the narrow confines of some traditional Christian concepts and treats him as the great mystical teacher he surely was in reality. This is the Jesus of the Gospel of Thomas rather than of the evangelical Christians. Even within the conventional Christan canon, if you look deeply enough, you'll find hints of this profound mystic. I find Deepak's work becoming more and more profound as his career progresses too. I was always slightly dubious about his work - probably simply because he was so famous and had a gleam of the successful celebrity about him - until I saw the Way of the Wizard recommended on Eckhart Tolle's website. Eckhart's recommended reading is a great source of fantastic books, such as De mello's awareness and The Fall by Steve TaylorThe Fall: The Evidence for a Golden Age, 6,000 years of Insanity and the Dawning of a New Era
Book Review: Book offers fresh look at Jesus Summary: 5 Stars
Though the study of Metaphysics is not new for me, Deepak Chopra offers insights that are refreshing and make sense of concepts that I always felt didn't make much sense. He sheds light on the true and deeper meanings of Jesus' teachings.
He explains the progression of the time following Jesus' death, giving background of the current biblical chapters and the lesser-known Nag Hammadi Scrolls. He also discusses the politics of the times when the books were written and why so many have been excluded from the versions so widely known today.
This book has made many concepts clearer for me and given me a new appreciation for Jesus' teachings.
I should also mention that Unity has a 6-week series discussing this book, with half-hour interviews of Mr. Chopra and Rev. Wendy Craig-Purcell. The series can be found online at Unity.FM .
I highly recommend this book. It has made a real difference in my life.
