Book Reviews of The Thief Lord

Book Review: Absolutely a wonderful read!
Summary: 5 Stars

I had seen Theif Lord on the shelves, and never paid it a second glance. but before a big plane trip i grabbed it. i was incredibly surprised. it was wonderful! i loved this book, loved it loved it loved it! the characters(spelling?), were a little flat, but they were marvelous characters with obviously different personalities. I loved Scipio! He was the theif lord with a dark secret that threatens to ruin everything.... and Prosper and Wasp... They were all great.
The story is about two brothers, Prosper and Bo, that have run away from their guardians. They go to Venice,[ smiles and sighs to self] and are taken in by a group of kids that are all clever thieves. this group of kids is mainly taken care of by the thief lord. The guardians hire a detective to find the brothers. The thief lord gets a big job, the largest he's ever had, and that leads to a great theft that they're all caught at. This theft leads to somethign truly odd and mysterious. A merry go round that- well you'll jsut have to see.
what happens when the detctive gets a little too close to the theif lord and the others? and what will happen when the thief lords secret is revealed to everyone? Will Prosper have Bo taken away? Will all the children go to jail? You have got to read this book. It is WONDERFUL! You will not regret it.
PS- I want a sequal to this one too :)

Book Review: One of my favorites
Summary: 5 Stars

There is something so absolutely haunting about this book that capture me the first time I read it. Set in the romantic city of Venice, it tales the story of two orphans who run into a group of other orphans. This all stems from the rather classic idea of poor little orphans and evil caretakers. It's a plot I"m sure we all love, at least I do.

But the book does more than show them being cute. I truly felt for them and their plight, two kids on their own in a city of which their mother only dreamed. It then becomes a near Neverland--kids living in an abandoned theatre on their own rules.

Their leader is a mysterious boy who calles himself the Thief Lord (hence the title). It seems to be as much as a miserable orphan as the rest of them, but he has his own secrets. His story is made only more powerful by just how mysterious it is kept.

There is also an incredible and subtle blend of fantasy that comes in via a missing caurosel (It reminded me a bit of "Something Wicked This Way Comes").

But it's not just a kid story. There is a slightly goofy character in the position of a detective. Amazingly enough, this is a modern story despite all the fairy tale qualities.

This is an exciting and surprisingly poignant and emotional book that will speak to everyone.

The Thief Lord
Cornelia Funke The Chicken House, 2002, 352 pages
Jordan Nash ISBN: 0-439-40437-1

The day Prosper and Bo away from their aunt and uncles home in Hamburg, Italy, they had no idea of the journey they'd set in stone for themselves. Follow them with the rest of their new-found friends, Hornet, Mosca, Riccio, and leader Scipio, the thief lord, into the heart of Venice, Italy. They will experience many unusual events including a mysterious robbery, the pompous junk collector Barbarossa, a kind detective, an aged old lion's wing, and a historical merry-go-round. As you travel with the band of thieves, you will taste the cold, frosted air of the winter in Venice, feel the bitter angst between friends, and watch as Scipio, the thief lord's, secret is revealed.
The Thief Lord is by far one of the best novel's I've ever experienced. Cornelia Funke will sweep you off of your feet while the rich and lush scenery of Venice, Italy surrounds you. I would definitely recommend this book for those who are intrigued by unexpected surprises, centuries old lullabies, and the heart warming laughter Cornelia Funke expresses with these teenage adolescents.

Book Review: Almost the level of Harry Potter - great book!
Summary: 5 Stars

I rented this book, unabridged, from my local audio-book store as a recommendation from the staff. I am over 30, enjoy nerdy tech reading, historical books (bios/auto-bios), some adult fiction (ie First Man in Rome, Wicked, Bialzack and the Little Seamstress, etc), and of course Harry Potter (who doesn't!). I wasn't very interested in another kid's book - but this one was fantastic! Great charachters, great plot line - everytime you think you know what's going to happen, there's a little twist! If you like to read with your child or want to share books with them, this book would be a great choice. It treats the child characters like real people with real feelings - good and bad. Thinking back to when I was younger and what might have attracted me to this book would be the way the adult characters interact with the kids. Very good - and even though each feeling is not explained and explored deeply every time (like Harry Potter), it gives the flavour and allows some personal interpretation and insertion of the readers own feelings into the story. Great book! <btw - the reader for this book in audio format is GREAT! At the same level as Jim Dale -- might be good for a family car trip!)

Book Review: The Magic of Venice
Summary: 5 Stars

The Thief Lord is a mystifying book that you won't be able to put down. This enchanting novel will leave every young reader yearning to visit Venice and see all of its intricate pathways, canals, gondolas, as well as all of the statues, lions with wings, angles, and the massive and wildly creative architecture in the buildings. Prosper and Bo are brothers who have lost their parents at a young age, leaving their aunt and uncle to take care of them. Unfortunately, the aunt only wants to take care of the younger brother Bo, so the two brothers are left with no choice but to run away to the magical land they heard their mother talk so highly about-Venice. While the aunt and uncle have hired a detective to find the boys, the boys find their own means of survival. They learn how to survive on their own, along with other orphaned and abandoned kids they have met in Venice. With the help of the Thief Lord, they have an ever-promising means of currency to buy their food, water and essential survival gear. The Thief Lord is the leader, until they find out who the Thief Lord is and what he is all about! Read this story of survival, love and incredible twists in the underworld of Venice!
