Book Reviews of The TestamentBook Review: One of Grisham's best Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of Grisham's best books. I was beginning to think he was more intent on plugging his political views rather than writing a really good novel. He is back on track with this one.I will admit that other reviewers' criticism that Grisham didn't spend enough time on the religious conversion is probably very true. Since, as we Grisham fans know, he is very capable of going on ad nauseum on a favorite topic (homeless, cigarette companies, etc.) I hate to write that he needed to spend more time with this - but that is the only criticism I can find. This novel is a very fast read. I was hooked from page one and by the end of the 2nd chapter, I knew I wasn't going to put it down until I finished it. I recommend this as a great, fun way to spend a Saturday, or any other day of the week.
Book Review: Grisham's best book yet, a welcome surprise Summary: 5 Stars
This is Grisham's best book to date, one that is apparently not being well received by many of his readers because he breaks many of his own conventions. This book isn't a good ol' legal thriller like "The Pelican Brief," or a gritty, Southern Gothic story like "A Time to Kill." Instead, Grisham depends far less on purely legal themes to carry his story and takes on weighter matters: Spirituality, greed, enthocentricism, ecology and addiction. The results are sometimes a little awkward, and his pure writing skills still aren't the best around. But this is an admirable work, and equally entertaining. I particularly like his treatment of Christianity and ecology, made without a trace of cynicism; he actually succeeds in convincing us that they are compatible subjects.
Book Review: Grisham's latest shows maturity and world concern Summary: 5 Stars
John Grisham appears to be a wealthy author who also walks the walk. More and more his books have been extensions of his value system and it looks to me like that value system is remarkably durable. Combined with what appears to be a reluctant faith in the essential goodness of people, Grisham's values come through with a sort of missionary zeal in "The Testament". This will likely be far from his most popular offerings because he makes the usually unforgivable move of turning the spotlight on the most wretched of Western pursuits - inheriting well - and contrasting it with less-than-third-world Brazilian rainforest culture. In anybody else's hands, this would have been preachy but Grisham does a masterful job of pulling it off. And, as usual, he does it with a twist. Bravo.
Book Review: Surprisingly pleased by a modern novelist Summary: 5 Stars
A daughter of one of my cousins repeated to me that John Grisham was her favorite writer, though she had not yet read THE TESTAMENT. I do not include many 20th century novels in my varied reading schedule, as the philosophy, the gratuitous sensualism, and the style often run counter to my beliefs and sensibilities. But I checked out reviews of the various Grisham books and was intrigued enough by reviews of the then newly published THE TESTAMENT, to purchase and read a copy. Here I found an interesting story with a moral, with a theme of Christian redemption woven within a tale that presented a variety of characters ranging from the calculating, the greedy materialist, the weak but well meaning, to the saintly. The ending was neither mushy nor despairing, but instructive.
Book Review: The Testament by Grisham 5 stars Summary: 5 Stars
In my experience reading books as a High School student I have found myself often going to Grisham for the finest quickest reads. He tantilizes the mind with amazing detail. I have read all of his books to date and have written lengthy papers on many of them. I have yet to be dissapointed by any of his novels. Many people think I am smarter than I am because I chose to read his novels, but I find them genuinly intriguing. I recommend this one especially. For the other avid Grisham readers this will be a welcomed change from his mainstream lawyer novels. This book is written in a different style with many more twists and turns than the others. This novel was a very quick read, I compleated it in only 8 days. Considering how truly stupid I am this says quite a bit about the book.
