Book Reviews of The Testament

Book Review: Much fun to read!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been reading Grisham's books since he first debuted in 1991 with The Firm. I truly enjoyed this book because it's more relaxed than the others. The Firm, The Client, A Time To Kill, and The Runaway Jury were all dark, negative and gloomy (not to mention that Grisham makes lawyers look like the pariahs they can be.), but this time, as was with his lsat book, The Street Lawyer, this book has heart - and a conscience. I'm a Christian, and I was moved by Nate's growing awareness of something being bigger than himself. I believe Grisham is growing aware of this, too. Parts of the book made me laugh out loud, especially when you read of the billionaire's ex-spouses and kids circling like buzzards after his demise. Oh, don't they though! I think you'll find this a good read, a sense of yourself, and how would you react to this much money left to you, and that there is a bottom line other than financial. Nate gained a sense of who God is, and where he is before Him. I did, too.

Book Review: Christians Understand
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading several of Grisham's books, I was pleased to read this new book that unfolds the spiritual side of the master author. I will assume that this will be one book that probably most fans will not enjoy nor understand. Until someone has experienced the Grace that Jesus Christ has to offer will they comprehend the religious concepts in this book: Money doesn't matter. Callings on Lives. Purity and Happiness. Eternal Value of Life and Works. Faith in Jesus. Grisham has created a classic that will appeal to those who have met Christ as their personal saviour. Still, I recommend this book for Christians and Non-Christians alike. It is well written, and although it drags in some places, overall, it's a winner. A life transformed by Jesus is not a flaw in character development. It is a true reality that millions know about. Life with Christ is an endless hope. Life without Christ is a hopeless end...

Book Review: Reaches a new and higher level as a writer of substance
Summary: 5 Stars

I've read all but one of Grisham's novels, and I've always had very ambivalent opinions of them and of Grisham as a writer. I've always described Grisham as a great storyteller but a mediocre writer. Until now I had always considered A TIME TO KILL to be his best. THE TESTAMENT has displaced that earlier work at the top of the list. For the first time since A TIME TO KILL, Grisham has written passionately about his subject. For the first time EVER, he has found a spare and graceful writing style. I would have given 4-1/2 stars to A TIME TO KILL and 3's and 4's to his other novels. THE TESTAMENT, however, is unquestionably a 5 star work.

It is very difficult to write a good novel of universal appeal where religious faith is an essentially integrated element. But Grisham has done it and has eschewed his erstwhile formula of courtroom tactics and intrigue.

For the first time, I eagerly await his next.

Book Review: GREAT and ORIGINAL!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was not incredibly excited about reading this book as I read less than flattering reviews, however, loving Grisham novels as I do I gave it a shot. AND IT WAS GREAT! The story was quite different as it centered on a recovering alcoholic and addict as he searched out an unsuspecting heir to a huge fortune. Nate O'Reilly (the main character) found himself in the Pantanal of Brazil in search of a woman who did not want to be found. Meanwhile, back in the States, the other heirs, all greedy underachievers at best, hired lawyers to stake their claim to a fortune they were rightfully left out of. Normally Grisham's tails take us through court room dramas or other legal excitement but in The Testament, all such legal matters took a back seat behind an interesting and witty character as he soul searches and tries to overcome his past. Don't believe the reviews and GIVE IT A SHOT!

Book Review: Grisham is writing for his fans, not for movie adaptations
Summary: 5 Stars

Grisham has returned to entertainig his fans when he writes and not for the movie revenue. I discovered several messages in this novel. The first message centered around the Troy Phelan family; one of the richest families in America, yet probably the most dysfunctional. Another message centered around Rachel (Troy's daughter). She had nothing tangible, yet she was the happiest, sincerest, honest, and most loving individual in the novel. The message: Be kind to your family, with hard work,we can all become the person we were meant to be if we have enough faith in God and in ourselves. The character Nate proved this point by going from drug addiction to becoming complete in himself

I'm anxiously awaiting his next novel. Now that Grisham enjoys writing for his fans rather than for the movie adaptation, I'm sure that it will be an immediate best seller.
