Dan Simmons shows his talent as a writer by being able to keep the reader engaged in a tale of hopelessness amidst the mundane sameness of isolation from civilization. Whether or not history will ultimately provide the full story about the Franklin Expedition, it would not detract from Mr. Simmons' engaging narrative.
