The templar Legacy by Steve Berry - First book in the Cotton Malone Series
This is a fascinating book on as theme that has been used a lot in many books. There are two main themes:
The Legend of the Knight Templar
The resurrection of Christ and the Gnostic gospels.
On the first these there are many books I have read and probably deal with the theme a lot better:
Iacobus by Matilde Asensi
Las Puertas Templarias by Javier Sierra
The Last templar by Raymond Khoury
And on Christ's Divinity I found that these two books are better:
El Enigma Sagrado by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln is an excellent non fiction reference book that deals with both themes.
Gospel by Wilton Barnhardt Deals with Matthias Gospel and comes to the same conclusion about Christ divinity as Steve Berry.
In his book, Steve Barry creates Harold Earl (Cotton) Malone, an ex intelligence agent, retired, and now retired as a bookseller in Copenhagen. He possesses an eidetic memory; a man in conflict. His marriage has failed, he maintains a difficult relationship with his teenage son and is attracted to trouble as soon as he finds it.
Enter Stephanie Nelle, Malone's former boss at the DOJ, who is spotted in Copenhagen. She soon gets in trouble and Malone comes to her rescue. Come to find out, Stephanie has received from her estranged husband, Lars Nelles, his research notes in the mail. She had lost contact with him many years ago, just like with her son Mark. She is on a mission of atonement to find out if her husband's research was valid.
She was told to go to an auction and get a book--but instead of using Malone, she enlists the help of Malone's competitor Peter Hansen. Malone follows then to the auction at Roskilde, and is surprised by both the fact that Stephanie losses the bid and the high price the eighth thousand dollars.
Stephanie is attacked there and Hansen is killed. Malone convinces her former boss that she is not a field agent and she needs him. It soon becomes obvious that there are several parties interested in Lars Nelles' work.
At the Abbey des Fontaines, the last Templar master is dying. His seneschal is tending to him. There will be a big struggle caused by his death--a faction lead by Raymond de Roquefort who is belligerent in restoring the Templar's power and will stand to nothing to find "The Great Devise"--the Templar's hidden treasure and possibly Christ's bones which prove he never resurrected. It is said that Jacques de Molay, the Last Templar, before he was killed in 1308 by King Phillip IV of France, had the premonition to hide all the Templar's wealth and to this day it has not being found. The burial of the master is immediately scorn by revolt; and instead of the seneschal
succeeding the Master, Raymond de Roquefort is elected and the seneschal is imprisoned. He escapes thanks to another brother who was trained by the master and joins in the search for "The Great Devise" .
Nelle was armed with vital clues to a series of puzzles scattered across Europe. Soon Malone and Stephanie join forces with the seneschal--who turns out to be the Stephanie's son, Mark. They are also joined by two powerful and rich persons: Cassiopeia Vitt and Henrik Thorbaldsen.
So the book becomes a race between the new Templar master and our heroes to a trail where a discovery lies that could shock the civilized world--and, in the wrong hands, bring it to its knees.
It was a wonderful easy read. As I said, the theme is overused but Berry makes it work.
Summary of The Templar Legacy: A NovelThe ancient order of the Knights Templar possessed untold wealth and absolute power over kings and popes . . . until the Inquisition, when they were wiped from the face of the earth, their hidden riches lost. But now two forces vying for the treasure have learned that it is not at all what they thought it was?and its true nature could change the modern world.
Cotton Malone, one-time top operative for the U.S. Justice Department, is enjoying his quiet new life as an antiquarian book dealer in Copenhagen when an unexpected call to action reawakens his hair-trigger instincts?and plunges him back into the cloak-and-dagger world he thought he?d left behind.
It begins with a violent robbery attempt on Cotton?s former supervisor, Stephanie Nelle, who?s far from home on a mission that has nothing to do with national security. Armed with vital clues to a series of centuries-old puzzles scattered across Europe, she means to crack a mystery that has tantalized scholars and fortune-hunters through the ages by finding the legendary cache of wealth and forbidden knowledge thought to have been lost forever when the order of the Knights Templar was exterminated in the fourteenth century. But she?s not alone. Competing for the historic prize?and desperate for the crucial information Stephanie possesses?is Raymond de Roquefort, a shadowy zealot with an army of assassins at his command.
Welcome or not, Cotton seeks to even the odds in the perilous race. But the more he learns about the ancient conspiracy surrounding the Knights Templar, the more he realizes that even more than lives are at stake. At the end of a lethal game of conquest, rife with intrigue, treachery, and craven lust for power, lies a shattering discovery that could rock the civilized world?and, in the wrong hands, bring it to its knees.
