Book Reviews of The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love

Book Review: Better than sweet tater pie!
Summary: 5 Stars

Having been a Sweet Potato Princess all of my like, I found Ms. Browne's first book the marshmallows on top and the pecans chopped within the pudding! Maybe I am a bit partial, having been her 7th grade English teacher - and hopefully the one who gave her her first tiara. Her book IS delightful; what more can I say? Every single word and mark of punctuation is true and her advice/experiences are universal - and she is funny to boot. Even had I not been a part of the Jackson environment for years and years, I would still appreciate and profit from her words of wisdom. We all need to be reminded of "what a woman wants." This little book is now on the top of my hubby's MUST READ list, whether he wants to or not: See I have made The Promise.

Book Review: What a laugh!
Summary: 5 Stars

I made the mistake of reading this book when I was waiting for my car to be fixed. I was waiting in the lounge with about 4 other people, all of whom will undoubtedly be telling people at dinner tonight about the Very Strange Lady who was laughing so hard she was crying!

That was okay, but the hard part was when the service manager came to talk to me about my car and I'm wiping tears from my eyes as I was reading the pregnant lady underwear section!

This was a really funny book. I've read other books and been irritated by the 'ism's of a region, but this one is just about women who make no excuses and enjoy being women. In an age where everyone works very hard to be what they aren't, this book just enjoys the hell out of being a girl.

Book Review: Laugh Out Loud Funny
Summary: 5 Stars

Pick this book up when you need a good laugh. I started reading about these outrageous women and their antics and almost fell off the couch several times because I was laughing so hard.

The narrator appoints herself "Sweet Potato Queen" at a St. Patrick's Day Parade in Jackson, Mississippi. Her friends agree that such a fabulous idea should be shared and they too become self-appointed queens. The gals all wear unbelieavably proportioned green dresses and white majorette boots. Of course, being a queen is more than looking good, it is a way of life and readers are let in on important secrets such as how to get a man to do whatever you want. I have loaned my copy to a friend and have four more friends waiting in line to read it.

Book Review: Northern thoughts on southern belles
Summary: 5 Stars

There are few books out there that speak to the generation of women currently trudging through their forties and fifties. Fewer still that do it with any kind of humour, joy, wisdom and attitude. The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love does and does it in spades. Who among us could not love a book about women that does not once mention estrogen replacement therapy, but does speak long and lovingly of Fat Mama's Knock You Naked Marguerita Mix? The Sweet Potato Queens represent a celebration of what we are; outrageous, loyal, funny, smart and real. Oh so real. It makes this reader want to ditch my Northern Canadian pasty white demeanour, find me a big old red wig and something with enough sequins to blind a sled dog. You go girls.

Book Review: Truly the FUNNIEST Book I've ever read......
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the funniest book I've ever read and I must relate her style of writing to that of Erma Bombeck many years ago. But...this is about a "2002 kind of Southern woman" that I think is the "Woman of Today" that every middle aged woman wants to be....If you don't already think like her.....her style of writing and humor will certainly make you "stop and think" about the people you have "known" who would fit into the chapter perfectly....or even the times you, yourself have experienced those very same "thoughts or feelings" that the main character is having. I literally spent my nites laughing out loud at this book and calling my friends saying "let me read you this line"!
