Book Reviews of The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of LoveBook Review: Laugh Out Loud Funny - and ALL true! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this book last week and today ordered 3 more copies to give away to friends who are also "women of a certain age". In a recent column of the NY Times Book Club someone noted that the latest club selections, although good, were somewhat depressing. The call went out for books that were not only good but funny, and this one definitely fills the bill. It's laugh out loud funny, doubly so because the observations all hit home - they are sooooooo true! I particularly enjoyed the chapters "The True Magic Words Guaranteed to Get Any Man to Do Your Bidding" and "Men Who May Need Killing, Quite Frankly". Although the Sweet Potato Queens may all live near Jackson, Mississippi, I find that the wisdom within these pages are universal truths. A big thank you from a "sister" Queen in California.
Book Review: Ladies, the big three Summary: 5 Stars
Ladies, there are three books that you MUST read if you're interested in great storytelling, wonderful plots, Southern themes, and a great time: "The Divine Secrets" is the first, and many of you have already read this great literary achievement. The second is Jackson McCrae's "The Bark of the Dogwood"--a haunting and intricate portrait of Southernisms gone horribly wrong. And the third is this spectacular read--"The Sweet Potato Queen's Book of Love." These three, you simply can't do without. All are great, but by all means, buy and read TSPQBOL first! The humor, depth, sadness, insight, and wonderful writing of Browne makes this a great time. Why this book isn't better known is beyond me. Finding something this good, off the beaten path, makes me want to ask, "Where has this writer been?"
Book Review: Great book! Great humor! Great women! Summary: 5 Stars
I've read this book TWICE now. Once when first published and again more recently--I didn't want to forget ONE MORSEL of advice or humor. This is a sassy bunch of gals and they KNOW it! I've had the chance to be in Jackson for the Paddy's Day Parade and have had the pleasure seeing the Queens work the crowds. I've enjoyed them and this book so much that I think I'm going in drag next year to see if they'll accept me as the lowest wannabe. Frankly, I don't understand the few bad reviews seen here. They are so mean-spirited and catty that I must assume they are from some VERY FRUSTRATED women whose husbands/ex-husbands have been snagged by one or all of the Queens. Or either from men who have been dumped (or worse, never got the chance to make it that far) by a Queen. Oh, well...c'est la vie. It's a great read and a hoot to boot!
Book Review: Words to live WELL by! Hilarious and fun! Summary: 5 Stars
I discovered the Sweet Potato Queens by accident, and wish I had known about them a whole lot sooner. Now, I have read all four books, and I'm telling everyone I know about them. As a Northerner, I mightn't have been expected to take so well to Jill Conner Browne's philosophy on life. However, reading with the attitude of taking what is useful/interesting to me and leaving the rest, I was able to enjoy the honest, self-confident, and generous nature of the author. Some things you might find ridiculous; others might give you pause for thought. Mostly, it's just a fun, thoughtful romp. I, personally, prefer to listen to the audio version--I think hearing the author's voice adds a lot to the experience. Reading the printed book after hearing the audio version works pretty well, too. If you're looking for a good time, read SPQ.
Book Review: A Book About Everything Southern Summary: 5 Stars
This is the funniest book that I have read in a long time. It has everything a good Southern book should have in it. There is talk about food, family, friends and everything else imaginable. Oh yes, and the every famous Southern obituaries! You might even have to stop and try out a recipe or two along the way. I laughed at loud while reading this book at times. You just can't put it down once you begin reading it. I just believe that this book is a must read.Once you've read this book, you'll want to come to Jackson, MS, and go to the St. Patrick's Day Parade, vist Hal and Mal's and visit the Queen owned establishements mentioned in the book. This is the most entertaining book you will read all summer! Any Southern woman can relate. And those of you not from the South, well, you will wish you were!
