Book Reviews of The Sweet Far Thing (Gemma Doyle, Book 3)Book Review: the sweet far thing Summary: 5 Stars
Though "The Sweet Far Thing" has its flaws, these are small in comparison to all that Mrs. Bray has achieved with this series. I would say that the most serious flaw is that the magic seems to be made up as we go along. In other words, it does not feel as if the series was plotted from the beginning because there are no real hints that Eugenia Spence will turn out as she does. Additionally, Felicity's story could not be gathered from any of the previous books. I feel that Felicity is, by far, the most interesting of all the girls, & "The Sweet Far Thing" delivers more surprises for her character.
Taking this flaw into account, Mrs. Bray's beautiful prose could make any scene worth the read. One of the strongest parts of this series actually has nothing to do with magic: the young girl's growth into women. I very much enjoyed their journey & the realistic final chapters, which do not provide your typical fairytale ending. Some readers will be disappointed with the ending, but I found it to be far more powerful than what most readers would have wanted.
Book Review: A wonderful finish Summary: 5 Stars
I adored all of the books, even after rereading them about two years after the initial reading. The characters are well written and have the most important thing that I look for in characters in books; that they behave like real people. Each had their own flaws and ambitions and acted accordingly. In a situation where (for all practical purposes) all the power in the world is at stake, the characters did exactly as I would expect flawed humans to do. I think this is a wonderful story of learning about yourself (which I find not nearly enough people do), and of things like friendship, bravery, love and the flawed nature of humanity. While it is no literary masterpiece, I think this book has a lot to say if you pay attention in more than just a good story; I find there is a lot of good wisdom in here and overall I find this book both a very good story and a great source of wisdom (even if none of the wisdom is news to many, I feel its useful to revisit at every possible opportunity.) I highly recommend the series to anyone, yes even boys.
Book Review: Bitter still sweet Summary: 5 Stars
This book was better than i imagined. I didn't set my expectations high because i have read some bad endings, but i am glad to say that this wasn't one of those times. If you've read A Great and Terrible Beauty and Rebel Angel, you have to read the last book in the trilogy, the twist that it takes will surprise you (it did to me, i did not see that ending coming). it's not everyday that u read a book and a day after you're still thinking about it. To me this was one of those books. You'll feel like your part of the book. You'll be right there with Gemma and Kartik. Anyway i had to read it, i really wanted to know why it was called A Sweet Far Thing. Libba Bray is a great writer hopefully we'll see more books by her in stores. I was going to write a review of the book but i didn't see the point seeing as there's one here anyways.
But if you're reading reviews to see if you should get the book, my answer is yes, get it, It'll take you to a world where magic rules and if you are not carefull it'll take you over....
Book Review: brilliant! Summary: 5 Stars
No spoilers :)
I personally think that this is one of the best endings to a series that I've ever read in my life. TSFT wrapped up basically every major situation up that had appeared in the previous books and ended the series, for me, with a satisfying yet poignant conclusion.
Although there were some flaws like some of the ones previously mentioned by the other reviewers, I don't believe that there is any book that can completely conclude everything that happened to every reader's content, whether it's the ending to a book or a series.
I loved this book from the very first page to the very last, as well as the first two books. In my opinion, AGATB was the best written and the most satisfying, TSFT was a close second, and RA was very well written also but lacked some of the 'mysteriousness' that was present [to me] in the other two books. :) If you enjoyed reading the first two books, then this book is well worth the time to read and enjoy!
Book Review: Nothing always works out Summary: 5 Stars
Judging by some of the reviews here, a lot of people were disappointed by the last installment of the Gemma Doyle Trilogy, the Sweet Far Thing. I can agree that this book is needlessly long at points. Some scenes in this book could be cut out without greatly affecting the plot of the book. However, most readers complain about the same thing (Spoiler alert): Kartik and Gemma don't get their fairy tale happy ending.
Fact: In real life, MANY people miss out on a happy ending. Why should this novel be anything different? Gemma had to make a sacrifice, just like her mother, friends, and colleagues had to make sacrifices along the way. In my opinon, the bittersweet ending made this trilogy what it is. People sacrifice and people accept losses to acheive peace. What matters is they continue on with all that they have learned, which is what Gemma and her friends were able to do. This book is brilliant, and it a fantastic closer to a fantastic series.
