With this novel's ominous opening words--"We think we know the ones we love"--Greer thrusts us into the quickly unraveling world of Pearlie Cook, who, until recently, was quite the ordinary housewife in a nice San Francisco neighborhood. The unexpected visit of a stranger - Buzz Drumer - seems at first like any surprise encounter with a person from the past, and Pearlie assumes that Buzz is simply an old friend of her husband's, bearing thoughtful gifts and affection for his friend. But nothing is as it seems--not Buzz, not his intentions, and especially not her husband. And as Pearlie grows to understand what Buzz has come for, she is forced to question what her marriage means to her--and what she would do to save it, or herself.
Greer's luminous prose illuminates each odd element of Pearlie's dilemma with sharp specificity, from Buzz's deep knowledge of women's corsets to the amusement park by the sea where Buzz and Pearlie plot together. But his storytelling is this novel's true wonder, the way he weaves history--the draft, the Rosenbergs--through Pearlie's revelations and discoveries, ultimately suggesting that the real story of marriage is the one we can never fully understand.
