Book Review: A Lovely Inspirational Story

The Story of the Other Wise Man by Henry van Dyke is a moving extension of the beloved Christmas story. It was read to me and my sister each year at the season of Epiphany by my father, Ted Schuyler. Years later, I also read it to my own children, but eventually our much-loved copy was lost. My children grew up, and although I occasionally thought of the story, I didn't revisit it. Then during a scripture study at my church, a discussion of the Magi led me to recall this story. Since I wanted to share it with some of my friends, but no longer had a copy available, I went to Amazon. Again, the magic worked. There were numerous options available, including several used paperback versions that I could purchase. I bought two, one to share with local friends, and one to mail to author Kittredge Cherry, whose wonderful "Jesus in Love" novels are a major part of my current spiritual reading, and which I have reviewed for Amazon. Amazingly, Kitt had not previously encountered this delightful story. Again, thanks to Amazon for being such a wonderful resource of classics!
Summary of The Story Of The Other Wise Man
During the time of the birth of Jesus, a fourth Wise Man, Artaban, sells all his possessions to buy three precious jewels which he hopes to present to the newborn Christ Child. Although he planned to journey with the other three Magi to Bethlehem, he is delayed and fails to rendezvous with them. Artaban spends his whole life searching for the Christ, and in his search he gives away one, then two, and finally all three of his jewels to help others, but in the end his quest is fulfilled in unexpected ways. Although written more than a century ago, this is still a topical Christmas story for young and old that captures the true spirit of Christmas.Christian Living Books
