Book Review: Superbly done WW2 Biography
Summary: 5 Stars
I enjoy DDay (Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers) stories immensely and am fascinated by that generation, their sacrifice and the struggle that ultimately won WW2. Having read many other accounts of DDay, I was very skeptical that Shaara could lend anything new to the storyline. I was wrong.
Jeff does a fantastic job of weaving the personalities of characters from Rommel, Eisenhower, Patton (one of my favorites) and some on-the-ground characters who dropped and were a part of the invasion. You can tell the historical accuracy as well as the personality accuracy, as I have read biographies and other stories and all of the major historic and characterizations match up. Again, Jeff has taken a story told by many and brought his own superior skills to the telling of the tale.
I would love to see a movie taken from this book, utilizing the multiple perspectives that tell the story on both sides of the war. It also makes me want to go back and watch band of brothers again, even though that story follows the 101st and the book follows the 83rd Airborne.
A fantastic read, I think I finished it in 2 days time and can't wait to re-read it. Highly recommended.
