Book Reviews of The Space Between Us: A Novel (P.S.)

Book Review: The Space Between Is
Summary: 5 Stars

This was one of the best books I have read. My interest in India was deepened with this moving, insightful and detailed work of art about the relationship between families and the people who care for them over a life time. The secrets and lies that are carried within a family; and the universal longing for love and sweetness in all our lives. The poverty described in this book and of course in India is heart breaking and sobering. The choices one is forced to make just to be able to barely survive is a reality check for all of us. I applaud Thrity Umrigar and hope you will enjoy it also - it is a special treat.

Book Review: Is "this" how it is today?

The Space Between Us: A Novel ( Deckle Edge ) (P.S.)This book has stayed with me for over a year. I'm about to lead discussion for my book club. These two women have haunted me - and the ending threw me for a loop. Are the living conditions still so horrible for some,
and the "unseen" caste system in place. The two women so alike in many ways - but could not use the same plates. Is this through their culture, traditions - etc....Very curious - Jersey

Book Review: Emotionally Raw and Exquisitely Written
Summary: 5 Stars

This book had me from page one and kept me involved throughout. I felt every emotion that each character felt. It opened my eyes to the inhumane unfairness that power, money and greed has on society, not only in India but everywhere. Thrity Umrigar made these characters REAL and come alive. I wanted to cry, laugh, throw my fist in anger but more importantly I wanted to help. Her writing is like a beautiful song so sweet to the ears that you never want it to end. Give yourself a treat and read one of the best stories ever written.

Book Review: One of the best books I've read
Summary: 5 Stars

When I visited my in-laws in Delhi their interactions with their servant girl was difficult for me to observe. Reading "The Space Between Us" took me back to Delhi and I now better understand that the mistress/servant relationship is culture based and not one of altruism. "The Space Between Us" is a must read if you want to glimpse into India's class status, and how it determines the quality of life for those born of a lower caste (even though the caste system is deemed nonexistent).

Book Review: My review of The Space Between Us
Summary: 5 Stars

" Thrity Umrigar's novel transcends differences: the theme of insider-outsider status. A story about hopes and dreams that rise and fall with each twist of fate between the haves and have-nots. Bhima and Sera have similar concerns yet so different. Their conflict creates a vaccum/space between them. Finally, the spiritual freedom to begin a new for one who has lost everything and is now ready to face the unknown."
