Book Reviews of The Skin Type SolutionBook Review: great education on your skin Summary: 5 Stars
i have read several books on skin care and this is one of the best. the book is written by a successful dermatologist who has a practice, is a professor and does lots of research for many of the major companies. she does not sell or promote any one product over another so in my mind that improves her credibility.
as others have mentioned there is a test to help you determine your skin type, is it perfect - no, is it very good at helping you get figure it out - YES! i already knew my skin type but it was good to see the level of each of the factors i was. after completing the test you can read a plethora of information about your skin, the cleansers to use, whether or not to use toner or moisturizer, special treatments, ingredients to avoid and ingredients/products that are beneficial to your skin.
i think the book is excellent for the education alone. even if you go see a dermatologist you will feel smarter and be able to ask better questions and make better decisions about your treatment. the recommendations in this edition of the book are for products you can buy in the drugstore or department stores. there is only brief mention of prescription products or medicines. i like that because i feel more empowered to treat my skin that way instead of having to depend on a doctor or paying for expensive prescriptions.
not to sound like an infomercial but dr. baumann's suggestions are working for me so far. i've done other programs (such as the acne cure) but they neglected one or more aspects of my skin, such as pigmentation problems. this really covers everything you need for clear, healthy, younger looking skin. it seems like a lot of money and effort is put into skin care these days and that's because how your skin looks has a big impact on how you feel about yourself and your appearance. if you're having skin problems or you just can't seem to find the right products for your skin, do yourself a big favor and buy this book. it's totally worth it!
Book Review: One of the best GIFTS you can give yourself/your women friends! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm 58 and have, like most other women my age, spent oodles of dollars over decades on various skincare products with no understanding as to whether they were good or bad for my skin.
After reading this book, I will never spend another penny on a product or procedure that won't benefit my particular skin type.
Dr. B. has taken the confusion out of what products I should buy and apply, what procedures I need and what protections and precautions I should take to have the best skin ever.
My skin is dry, non-pigmented, reactive and wrinkled.
I now know exactly what skincare regime I should be following to protect my skin from further wrinkles and to eliminate some of the wrinkles that I have.
I also now have an idea about how to start up with applying Retin-A or retinoyl products to avoid irritation.
Dr. B doesn't push plastic surgery (and I am thankful for that) but she gives insight into how Botox and fillers can be used effectively to eliminate deep lines and wrinkles.
One of the best two tips she gives is that Thermage can be used to help with puffiness under the eyes and sagging skin AND that facials (which I used to have about once a month) do not benefit the skin in the long run.
She doesn't "push" any particular products. She gives low price, medium price and high price choices for varous skincare products.
And she gives you a choice of a non-prescription AND a prescription skin care regime for each particular type of skin.
This is a terrific book!
Book Review: I think she has changed my life Summary: 5 Stars
I've never reviewed a book until now. However, I feel so strongly about this one that I can't wait to share it with family, friends, and complete strangers. I've had skin problems for the past 20+ years and have never found anyone (doctor, dermatoligist, spa facialist, friend, family) who has been able to explain to me what is going on with my face or ever give me the plan to help. I am what she decribes as a DSPW (Dry, Sensitive, Pigmented, Wrinkle prone), or as she nicknamed the "desperate skin type". Dr. Baumann brought me to tears when I read the chapter that explained what is wrong with my skin, and a plan to remedy the problems I face (no pun intended). She not only could explain the problem to me, but listed specific products I can safely use. With my dry skin, I was told often to exfoliate, but my skin is so sensitive that it would get very irritated. Products I would try would help a little for awhile, but would eventually make the problem worse once I started to react to them. I've wasted years of money trying products and either leaving them sit in the medicine cabinet or throwing them away. I eventually started to give up. Dr. Baumann has given me new hope. If you are like me and are plagued with even minor skin problems, you have to get this book. It has an easy questionaire that will pinpoint your skin type, and can help with any of your skin ailments. This book has saved me hundreds if not thousands of dollars in products I don't need or shouldn't use. I only wish I had found it 20 years ago.
Book Review: Stop blindly trying products, wasting money, and upsetting your skin! Summary: 5 Stars
If you're like me, you think your skin will calm down if you can just figure out the right things to buy. But it's not your fault! This book provided a well-rounded explanation of why my skin behaves the way it does under particular conditions, and i feel certain it will be as useful for others. I was surprised to discover that my skin is actually sensitive (and all this time i described it as simply bitchy.) Especially helpful was the list of "safe" products in every price range, and even ingredients to look for (or avoid). Dr Baumann can #1 Help get your skin under control #2 Teach you how to care for your skin type #3 Give you clues about how your skin will age, and how to address those issues #4 Take you through season changes and flare-ups. I can't really comment on the website, blog, etc as i haven't ussed them. So maybe you actually LIKE the challenge of creating a regimen and arsenal for your skin care needs, and you hope that you'll eventually stumble blindly upon the correct products and plan for your skin? Then by all means continue your quest and don't bother with this book.
Book Review: Easy to read; nice to know recommended purchases Summary: 5 Stars
Ever wonder what facial products would be best for your skin? Spent lots of dollars and questioned whether the products were doing any good? Kind of thought the skin you had in your twenties or thirties was the same as in your forties and fifties? This book helps you determine your skin type based on 8 different criteria and divides skin into 16 different types. From there the dermatologist provides recommended products for all price ranges and a specific regimen. Once you know your skin type, you can use the doc's website for updates on products also. Discovered I was using some products that weren't recommended for my skin type. I've now purchased the new products and have noticed somewhat of an improvement in 3 weeks and hope to continue to see improvements as more weeks pass. I've passed this book around to family and friends who have also made some discoveries. Recommended!
