Book Review: Timeless Fiction = Lasting Impressions

I borrowed this from the library when I was a kid, and absolutely LOVED it. Over the years the story stayed with me, returning to mind every once in a while, and making me wish I had a copy of it again- so I could reread it. (Even if it is supposed to be a story for teens.) So when the unexpected opportunity to purchase this book presented itself, I snatched it up in a HEARTBEAT, and without a second thought.
Now, I have an older edition of the book (the one featuring our silver-haired hero approaching his sweater-clad, brunette heroine from behind to tilt her neck just so), so frankly I was pleasantly surprised just moments ago to see this on a very recent "best books" list; with a new cover and amongst a bevy of more modern contemporaries in the modern fantasy genre. It was such a treat to see that it was not only still being published, but that others were finding out about this tremendous story, too. ^_^
I love that not only has the book been able to keep currant with today's audience and stay relevant in these somewhat different times, but also that young readers now are reaching out to books like it- beyond what might have been simply dropped onto the Latest Releases sections of their local libraries & bookstores. Whole new generations are able to find its truly engaging, powerful, enduring story, and maybe be led to other, older books as well; from stories written just decades ago, all the way back to ancient (and perhaps world) tales to chill the blood, or to the magnificent Shakespeare and traditional Gothic-era ghost stories. ..They might learn how cool it is to read, and of all the amazing stuff they might find in perusing other decades, eras and cultures's works. ^_^
But I digress: I love that this book has stuck around. It's had its covers continually updated, (as I know is the fashion amongst tomes that have lasted the duration), and it is SO COOL that readers still enjoy it today, with all the shallow, over-popularized tripe that's out there, and even though the original book has to be at least 20 years old. It puts a smile on my face to know that kids today are finding the same power & delight in this story that I found when I was a teen, and that it's endured beyond it's original printing. :)
Ms. Klause's characters are relatable, palpable & endearing, her storylines powerful, touching, enthralling and relevant, and her writing style is atmospheric, extremely illustrative, well-put-together & emotionally charged. This story's evocative quality proves itself in the simple fact that not only are kids today still discovering the wonders of this book even now, but that it has lingered beyond the flow of years in the hearts & minds of people like myself. -After all, who wouldn't want to find that love, that peace, that hope, faith, trust & freedom..?
I'll hazard a guess to say most of us, somewhere deep in our darkest, most secret heart-of-hearts, long to find our very own versions of Simon or Zoe- to find the answers we've all being looking so hard for- even though we're all grown up. :)
Summary of The Silver Kiss
Zoe is wary when, in the dead of night, the beautiful yet frightening Simon comes to her house. Simon seems to understand the pain of loneliness and death and Zoe's brooding thoughts of her dying mother.Simon is one of the undead, a vampire, seeking revenge for the gruesome death of his mother three hundred years before. Does Simon dare ask Zoe to help free him from this lifeless chase and its insufferable loneliness?
