Book Reviews of The Silver Chalice (Loyola Classics)Book Review: The Gift Summary: 5 Stars
He was discovered as Ambrose; a waif on the streets of Antioch, a quiet boy who seemed to have no future beneath the weight of the handicap of his birth; none save the talent that drew the notice of one of the wealthiest men in the city; a childless merchant longing for a son to raise as his own in the hope that his legacy would not be lost for want of an heir. He bargains for the child with Ambroses father, a tired, overworked commoner, who sees a chance offered to his boy - as if by a miracle - that he himself can never provide. They strike a deal, and Ambrose becomes Basil, son of Ignatius. Ignatius' long range plans did not come to pass. A brother, of lesser character and higher greed, eliminates the boy with the help of an unscrupulous magistrate and sells him into slavery.
Enter Luke the Physician - and Basil, who is by now a young man, has drawn the attention of the disciple of Jesus after Luke learns of the unusual gift the youth possesses; the magic of imagination emerging through his fingertips as fine art. He spirits the slave away from Antioch to Jerusalem, to the house of Joseph of Arimathea to engage his talent toward the quest of creating a masterpiece; a chalice to hold the Cup of the Last Supper - "The Silver Chalice". In the process, Basil, the artist slowly becomes Basil the Christian, as his job suddenly metamorphoses into a cross roads in his life - with Luke playing an ever important role in the shaping of his thoughts.
It is a Biblical novel whose importance will never fade away, and though it was a work of researched fiction, the story told glows with beauty. It takes the reader from the unrest of the streets of Holy City where Christianity is under attack from all sides to the secret societies that pledge their lives to protect the Holy Grail and keep it safe. It is a tale of women who must depend upon men to do the simplest yet vital tasks of business and finance since they have no political power of their own; the marriage of Deborra to Basil is one example of original "need" in the management of the affairs of a woman, although a love story is interwoven. Deborra is torn asunder from the last of her family and her newly embraced faith, along with a newly taken husband (Basil)whom she suspects does not really want to be married to her - is all that she has left to sustain her.
Much more than a story simply of religion, it is a powerful tale of love beyond self, of courage beyond self. It is also very well written in an easy style, therefore very entertaining as well as being impeccably woven; the story is alive and vital from beginning to end. The reader is directed to experience the excesses of wealth and power in halls of the powerful Nero where Christians conceal their faith under pain of death; yet when the chips are down, nothing can stem the courage behind tide of the movement; the scene of betrayal there by a beautiful but scorned woman is breathtaking. On into the desert on the backs of camels, further reveals the power of the new religion in an amazing spiritual bond between people who are otherwise worlds apart. The characters they meet on the trip over the desert while her father races onward by the sea, are truly the literary Spices of the Middle East.
