Book Reviews of The Shell Seekers

Book Review: Like finding an old friend...
Summary: 5 Stars

This novel is an all-time favorite in my much-loved collection of Rosamunde Pilcher books. I first read this book in the late 1980s and loved it.
The book centers around Penelope Keeling who is sixty-four and the daughter of an (now famous) artist whose work went for pennies while he was alive. Penelope has a few pieces of his work left including The Shell Seekers. Two of her three children, selfishly, want the painting sold and the third wants her to be happy doing with the artwork as she pleases. However, there's so much more to this beautiful story that is truly entrancing. The interactions between Penelope and her adult children are interesting and believable. Each chapter focuses on a different character (family, friends and loves) and their relationship with her.
Then Penelope's need to return to her childhood home is intense and she invites each of her adult children to go with her. Each refuses for one reason or another, so she takes two cherished young friends on a pilgrimage into her past that changes their destinies. The lost love, friends and family are so real, with their powerful emotions and everyday problems that we all encounter.
I was incredibly moved by the end of this book and found it even more warm and heartfelt than the first time I read it.

Book Review: UP THERE WITH MY ALL TIME FAVORITES
Summary: 5 Stars

It is high summer and I have just come away from visiting once again with Penelope Keeling and all the wonderful characters in The Shell Seekers. I read this book about 15 years ago when my kids were small.(I have a recollection of watching them in a wading pool while I cried for Penelope over Richard). I usually try to read one old favorite a summer and this year this was it! I long ago lost the paperback copy I had of this book so this time I read a library copy. This book is such a treasure on so many levels that I am going to order a copy for keeps!
It would be wonderful to read these 24 years later what happened to Nancy,Noel and Monica her children and to Antonia and Danus her "adopted" grandchildren. Much of this novel takes place during the second world war.
I seem to be stuck in the WW II in Britain era in my fiction reading,TV watching and DVD watching. See my recomendations below.

Book Review: Best Book I've Read in a Long Time
Summary: 5 Stars

This book deserves more than 5 stars. A co-worker gave it to me to read while she was looking for a book by another author whose series I started reading. I feel spoiled now and don't want to read a book by a different author! I have not finished The Shell Seekers yet, but if I had my way I would take a day off from work and read it from the time I get up in the morning til the time I go to bed so I can just immerse myself in it. The characters are so realistic and you get so drawn into their saga of their lives that you feel that you are a part of their world. You will love to hate Noel and Nancy who are the incredibly spoiled adult-brats of Penelope! This is just an incredibly delicious book and I can't say enough good things about it. Just read it and you'll see why so many people gave it a 5 star rating.

Book Review: Such a satisfying book
Summary: 5 Stars

I was so sad when I finished this book, I wanted it to go on and on!!

It's one of those books that leaves you wondering, once you've finished it, how the lives of the characters might have gone on.

The character of Penelope Keeling was brilliant. I could sympathize so much with her and even though two of Penelope's children are buffoons, Ms. Pilcher does such a great job developing them that you might even feel a bit of sympathy for them as well.

I will definitely read this book again. I don't know if the author reads these posts, but if she does - well done!! What a gifted person.

Book Review: emotionally satisfying
Summary: 5 Stars

I first read this book a couple of decades ago when my mother introduced me to Rosamund Pilcher. I've read it several times since then and last night watched the wonderful film version on television. I'm curious if anyone knows if the book of poetry Richard gives Penelope, Shoreline by Douglas McTeer is fictional or real? I don't find any information about it on line and yet the poem read from it is intriguingly lovely and made me wonder if I could find the author. Do you supposed Ms. Pilcher wrote it herself? (the poem) I'd be interested in hearing from anyone with clues about this. Thanks.
