Book Reviews of The ShackBook Review: Can't hold water Summary: 1 StarsAfter hearing many people go ga-ga over this book I borrowed it from a friend to read. While the first couple chapters detailed out a very captivating story my opinion of it quickly deteriorated from there. If people are reading this for an insight into God and His character this book falls far short of the mark. It is so far off base at times that I cringed as I read the words on its pages. In the end I felt sad and discouraged that one fictional book could create such a following and be so far from the truth. I am shocked by all the 5 star ratings and reviews that praise this book.
Book Review: Missing the point... as usual. Summary: 4 StarsI just finished 'The Shack' and read many of the reviews herein with great interest. I was particularly interested in the short review left by M. Ellis who apparently considers himself a "thinker" and much more intelligent than those in the "infancy of their spiritual studies" or perhaps anyone else who found this book to be uplifting.
Haven't we had enough haughty, holier-that-thous whacking us over the head with the Bible and condemning our flaws while flaunting their own feigned super spirituality? These people somehow cannot get past their own self righteousness to admit that the church as a whole has fallen woefully flat when it comes to helping those who really need help. Instead they become hellbent on protecting the institution of religion that creates more slaves than it does freed followers of Christ. If it weren't for that screwy mindset this book would never have been written.
I'm not saying the book is 100% correct theologically or that the author couldn't use a few writing classes, but I am saying this book is a poignant response to an ongoing problem found in way too many churches. That is, the members of these churches cannot or perhaps will not help people who have genuine problems. If you sit still in church and dress nice and smile and shake everone's hands you're fine. But if you seek help for any problem other than gossiping or fibbing you might as well pack your bags and move on. In my opinion, THAT is why this book was written. If and when the collective church ever decides to get off it's lazy back side and really start showing sinners God's love, books like this will always be popular.
Book Review: above and beyond Summary: 5 StarsThis novel is satisfying on every level. Don't read any reviews before you dig in; many of them have spoilers. I'm very glad I came to it knowing nothing except that a friend recommended it. My view of God and the way I look at my own relationships has improved by reading this book...and I can't recall the last time that happened (maybe "The Sparrow" by Mary Doria Russell had as big an impact).
Book Review: The Shack Summary: 5 StarsThis is the best book I've read in a long time. It's a thought provoking, must read for anyone of faith - regardless of your religion. It's a great discussion book for people of any age that are on a faith journey. Parents should read it, then give it to their teenagers or young adult children. I read it through very quickly the first time, and had a hard time putting it down. The next time I read it, I'll have a highlighter in my hand. Everyone we have recommended it to has loved it. We bought ten copies!
Book Review: Outside the Box Summary: 5 StarsThis book is incredible, insightful and inspiring at the same time. I could only hope that this really happened...and know that if I experienced something even partly as wonderful as this, this side of heaven, that I would be changed forever.
The Shack represents what I believe to be the true picture of God in the Trinity...not the "watered down" version we have made him to be in modern day churches. He is real, He loves us unconditionally and He is full of life. God wants us to know how much He loves us, and this book is a small picture of that.
I intend to recommend this book to anyone I can...and give it to as many as possible!
