Book Reviews of The Seventeen Traditions

Book Review: A MUST READ FOR EVERY CITIZEN OF THE WORLD
Summary: 5 Stars

WHAT A MARVELOUS LITTLE BOOK AND HOW WELL EXPRESSED. WE ALL NEED TO READ THIS ONE.

Book Review: A Bygone Era
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great insight to what made Ralph Nadir, living in the small fifties-era town he grew up in, and seventeen traditional values of a Stepford Family. Nostalgic as a Rockwell cover for a Saturday Evening Post, it is an enjoyable read. Many of the traditions are timeless lessons still valuable today. While reading it, however, I couldn't help sharing the author's lament about the challenge of raising a family today. Unfortunately, the days without TV and computers, knowing your neighbors, and walking two blocks to the library are sadly gone. But, I am optimistic that the majority of the lament is with each passing generation. Today's young people are developing new variations of the Seventeen Traditions and someday they will undoubtedly also wax nostalgic as their best days pass.

Book Review: Ralph Nader - First Citizen
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a wonderful read. It is filled with wonderful life lessons without preaching. Ralph is not only a wonderful speaker, but a prolific writer as well. His upbringing is a source of envy and inspiration. As a parent, I found many useful traditions to share and carry on with my new, young family. I can only hope this will serve me in raising two daughters who are as accomplished citizens as Ralph Nader. He is a man who should have statues erected in his honor across the country and a holiday named for him. A day to strive to love and act on behalf of our country in a way that shows love, not just states it blindly and passively. This book shows the very human side of Ralph's life which shaped him into the super man he is today.

Book Review: Lessons on Traditions
Summary: 4 Stars

This book offers greatly needed insight for a nation filled with antidotes, from fast-paced labeling of psychological disorders to quick fix prescription drugs and self-help book remedies. Ralph Nader takes the reader back to a slower paced society--a world enveloped by the wisdom of his parents. Chapter by chapter, Nader shares pithy, memorable maxims such as, "Jokes are to words as salt is to food" (81), along with other valuable scenarios which serve as life-enriching lessons. For a sampling of the earnest adult figure many of us may have missed while growing up, Nader's book is analogous in resource value (on a smaller scale) to The Discourses of Epictetus.

Book Review: A Real Look at Family Values
Summary: 4 Stars

I read the book after a deep look at my family and our behaviors while thinking about the future of my nearly grown children. This book is a reminder of specific traditions that become markers and guideposts in how we live, and what we live for. As an older man, with nearly grown children, I enjoyed the book but, I would especially recommend it to young couples planning to start a family.
