Book Reviews of The Seventeen Traditions

Book Review: The Best "Little Book" Ever Written for Parents of Young Children
Summary: 5 Stars

Elegant, timeless, profound, this is the best "little book" ever written for parents who seek to instill in their children traditional values that ennoble life, enrich community, and make democracy work.

I was particularly taken with its tone and pitch: serious yet never pedantic, thoughtful and eloquent and endearing without a hint of self-absorption, a tribute to a pair of uniquely responsible and caring parents, Nathra and Rose Nader, whose lives and whose four children (Ralph, Shafeek, Claire and Laura) epitomize the civic personality.

Buy this little jewel, an enchantingly disarming journey through Nader's boyhood in Winsted, Connecticut, to understand how values imparted by our mothers and fathers shape our destinies and, more specifically, which values enabled this small-town child of unconventional immigrant parents to grow up and become "one of the 100 most influential figures in American history." (For Nader's later history-changing life, you should also consider buying the critically acclaimed documentary film An Unreasonable Man on DVD).

Book Review: Wonderful in every way!
Summary: 5 Stars

When you read about the simple, decent, clean, progressive life that Nader family led you will know excatly why this great man was to become the leader and sage he is...for all these years.

It all makes perfect sense...much like the Nader Suggestions have always made perfect sense. Sensible folk will understand this immediately and those who are uncertain would be wise to read this collection of tales and hopefully come to the conclusion that it is all within us.

Those who dislike Nader and choose to hide their heads in the sand (sand becoming increasing toxic) will no doubt disregard this...and that is fine, such folk would not learn a thing here. This book is for the driven, those with passion, zest, love, respect...read the simple, clean verses and understand why this life is not only possible but is actually the only way any of us have left.

A remarkable, concise little book, enjoy and learn.

Book Review: A "must-read" gem; five stars are not enough
Summary: 5 Stars

This "big, little book" is a must-read for parents of young children. To those who harbor a lingering resentment against Ralph Nader for erroneously believing that it was he alone who handed George W. Bush the presidency in 2000, I strongly urge you to get over it. Future historians will appraise this man's good deeds for the American common person in a far more positive light than today. That Nader took the road less traveled is clearly explained in this gem of a work. The answer is quite simple: his parents, Nathra and Rose. Role models for how to raise children with love for each other, their parents and Nature; and later,to extend that childhood ambience to become caring adults whose main focus in life is concern for others--the human family, the global family, the environment---all under the banner of social justice. A four-hour read that is sure to change your perspective on family life.

Book Review: A PRIMER FOR 'REAL' FAMILY VALUES
Summary: 5 Stars

This small book was one of the most uplifting reads I've had in years! For those of us who have always admired and supported Ralph Nader, this book gives great insight into the foundation of his values and ideals.

However, even if one is not political, this book still offers succor for the soul by reminiscing about a simpler time in our country and offering hope for our collective future. Mr. Nader recalls the subtle and not-so-subtle lessons his parents taught and how those lessons have impacted his life and his work. Through his colorful storytelling, the importance of family life and parental guidance is laid bare. Its impact cannot and should not be ignored by a generation becoming more and more removed from interpersonal contact.

I highly recommend this short read and know that I will be affected by it long after I closed the back cover.

Book Review: A fantastic book for anyone starting a family
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is one of Nader's finest published works. It chronicles his life, and how he was raised. He takes the lessons learned as a kid growing up and puts them into seventeen specific traditions that are very easy to read.

The rare and valuable part of this book is that it's one of the only times you can find Ralph Nader willing to talk about his life rather than about politics. There isn't much, if any, political discussion in this book other than a few instances of how his family used politics to bring home values.

I highly recommend this book to all of my friends and family. He touches you with stories of how his parents immigrated from Lebanon and the lessons passed on to him and his siblings. The book will give you an appreciation for spending time with family, and does so in a way that is easy to read and enjoy.
