Book Review: How much who you endure for love Summary: 4 Stars
I found this book a quick enjoyable read and think it would be great for a book club. It brings up lots of things to discuss, such as adultery, marriage, women's lib, politics and friendship. I felt it was a story about how much a woman (Delia) truly loved her husband and what she was willing to do to spend the rest of her life with him. At times I was very annoyed at Delia and felt she wasn't really living her life, just kind of waiting for Tom to come to her. As for Meri and Nathan, I do not think their relationship was explored enough. I found myself wondering if he'd had an affair, which was certainly eluded to at one point. And why was Nathan so interested in Tom? I do not think that question was really answered. **SPOILER** The ending of the book really made me dislike Meri. Why didn't she try to make amends with Delia? She just destroyed the lives of these two people and went off to live a wonderful life with her husband and three boys. Thank you Sue Miller for a book that really makes you think about life issues long after you finish reading.
Book Review: Worth reading the book for its beautiful prose but the ending will disappoint Summary: 4 Stars
The writing stile is beautiful; I found the young couple's interactions sensual and loving. Would have enjoyed to just focus on them but this book focuses mainly on the two female protagonists views/experiences of their immediate world.
~Spoiler WARNING~
Like many others I did not like the ending. I could not get over Meri's self absorbed concocted reasoning behind her actions... for love? No, more like for self gratification of being sexually desired by someone other than her husband, specifically a man who had a history of chasing woman but showed no interested in her while she was pregnant. This was purely an ego trip on her part and a cheap thrill on the old man's. But then the more I think about it the more I realize that this is the mind of a truly guilty conscience.. She turns to denial in order to get over/ past the fact she destroyed someone's relationship.
I feel sorry for Delia.. what a wasted love
Book Review: Interesting reviews here Summary: 4 Stars
I liked this book - but more than that, I find the reviews here interesting. So many comments about "how could she still have sex with that philanderer" etc. I am 52 years old -- old enough to maybe have some perspective on why a person like Delia might stick around for her "husband." It doesn't have much to do with feminism, or whatever. It is really about life, in all of it's unevenness and unfairness. It's about dealing with aging, and the "choices" men and women have as they age.
I could see why all the things in this book happened. Mostly, I could see Meri's feelings about being pregnant, and how she felt afterwards (her body's "functionality") and her difficulty learning how to love her first born and her trouble reconnecting with her husband.
While some of this book is improbable (hence, my 4 stars) overall a good bit of it resonated with me.
