This book is used by Sacred Harp singers, who attend "singings" that employ it as the text. It is filled with old hymns, created mostly by amateur and semi-professional composers during the 18th and 19th centuries. These are written in a vivid, archaic musical style that emphasizes open fifths and pentatonic melodies. I think many of them are strikingly beautiful. So are the words, often taken from 18th-century English religious poets such as Isaac Watts and Charles Wesley. The music is printed in shaped notes to help with sight reading.
Long a great tradition of the American rural South, Sacred Harp singing in recent decades has spread across America and to Canada and Britain as well, as people from all backgrounds discover what a fulfilling, friendship-creating experience it can be.
