Book Reviews of The Runaway BunnyBook Review: An allegory of the soul Summary: 5 Stars
I just watched a movie that this book is featured in (Wit, if you're wondering), and not only did I recall what a great time I had as a kid reading this book, but what a stunningly true picture of the human soul it paints. How true it is that again and again we wish to escape, to run away from the One who cares for us unceasingly. No matter how doggedly persistent we are to have our way, to make ourselves foremost, we are loved and cared for, and ultimately brought back home.
I highly recommend this book to others as a simple but profound resource to remind ourselves of who God is, and how gracious he is to us. This is a joyful book that tells a small piece of that story in a simple way. In my view, the final line of the book is what locks it in as a classic children's story, and really reveals what love looks like even in the face of persistent insult and rebellion. One of the best ends to a book ever (Okay, maybe a stretch, but it's awesome).
Book Review: profound and solid expression of parental love Summary: 5 Stars
Enchanting and delightful expression of the devotion of motherhood, and a gentle answer to something every child at one point says they will do "I'm going to run away!" And this is the point.....at some stage children discover and become more deeply aware that they are separate beings from their closest family, and this is both a frightening and inspiring idea. Even today our own political debates on libertarian verses communitarian policies is but this idea write large. And yet in "Runaway Bunny" this idea is not writ small...for the Mother Bunny always replies "if you run away, I will become...." Acknowledging the child's growing ability and independence, but also expressing devotion, attention, and care.
Margaret Wise Brown is an unacknowledged genius of American letters and child psychology and I highly recommend her works, and especially Runaway Bunny.
Book Review: This is a beautiful, positive, book to share with a child Summary: 5 Stars
I love this book, and my kids love this book. It is about a bunny who wants to run away, but wherever he says he will go, the mother bunny says she will follow and take care of him. To me, this story is very loving and special, and the pictures are beautiful, you can tell someone put a lot of thought and love into the illustrations, they really are works of art and fun to look at.
That is how I feel about my kids, and I want them to know that. When my older daughter said she was going to run away, I told she could not because it was against the rules. (I read that idea somewhere.) I know some people would tell their kid, "I'll help you pack!" But my daughter tends to be shy and sensitive, and I would never say that to her!
Book Review: The Runaway Bunny Summary: 5 Stars
Although this is a children's book I purchased it as a Graduation gift. Along with it I gave a synopsis of Psalm 139 which I got from the internet. I told the kids they could substitute God or any of their family members into this story and know that they are never alone as they embark on life's journey. Psalm 139 speaks to the ever-present God. I love this book and it's message.
Book Review: a classic for all time Summary: 5 Stars
This book is like Good Night Moon- it has been around for generations and is not going away any time soon. It is a classic, and one that was read to me as a child; I read it to my children, and now have purchased it for my first grandchild. The story is timeless and always makes me tear up. And the illustrations are wonderful. It belongs in every child's library.
