Book Review: Philip Pullman found his voice in this wonderful tale.

I was hesitant to try this book, lest it would fail to live up to my expectations, after the splendor that was His Dark Materials. I have read most of Pullman's other children's books, standalone stories that are fine fare but nothing as spectacular. I should have known I was in safe hands after unknowing and fortuitously coming across an uncommon edition of the book--I have found one or two mentions of the 2000 Laurel-Leaf edition, with its attractive cover, on the web--and the story is Pullman, no doubt. If you love his books, you won't be disappointed with this one. This was the book in which Pullman found his voice.
