Book Reviews of The Revolution: A Manifesto

Book Review: An American Classic... If We Make It That Far!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Ron Paul revolution did not end with his failed presidential bid. Long after Paul lost the republican nomination to democrat John McCain (no, it is not a typo), one can still see a bevy of Ron Paul bumper stickers and lawn signs. Ron Paul is still a regular staple on news programs preaching a message of liberty and fiscal conservatism. And as of this review, Paul's book "The Revolution" is still hovering about the top 300 in amazon.com books. Why Has Paul sparked such a following amongst young and old alike, drawing equally from disaffected republicans and democrats? If you don't know, you will once you read the book!

Ron Paul refers to himself in "The Revolution" as a conservative. By this, he means a Goldwater/Reagan style conservative who believes in personal liberty, small government, and adherence to the Constitution. And he is writing in an age where republicans and democrats seemingly believe in none of these. Government is growing by the day (and Obama is ensuring that our already huge national debt gets even more unmanageable). The Constitution is regularly being usurped by an executive branch who feels they can do anything (Thanks GWB) and a Supremem Court who has misunderstands that "unconstituitional" is not shorthand for "anything the court dislikes." We are fighting a highly unnecessary and costly war because a president (rather than a congress) declared that we should. And now, we are bailing out an economy in debt by going into debt (seems like trying to a bathtub that has a hole by pouring water into it as quickly as possible.)

Paul makes a compelling case, like FA Hayek, Milton Friedman, and Barry Goldwater before, that liberty is the best policy. Through history, which Paul amply quotes from, the trend shows that government often is the worst at solving problems and private individuals are the best. Healthcare was better, more available, and cheaper before the government mandated the creation of HMO's. The Federal Reserve has caused many more montary problems than they have fixed. And services provided by government almost always cost more and are less efficient than those provided by private industry.

Another area of high concern for Paul is our infidelity to the Constitution, particularly Amednment X, which garauntees that the federal government ONLY be allowed to do the few things delegated to it by the constitution (other things being the domain of states). Regulate drugs? Regulate abortion? Meddle in education? These are all things that, by the Constituiton, are not the domain of the Federal, but the State, governments. And the logic of this is that (a) when government is more local, it is more responsive, and (b) allowing the states a more robust role allows different constituencies the ability to decide for themselves. (If Arkansas wants to prohibit abortion, but New York wants to allow it, both can do so under Amendment X.) While the government tends to treat the Constitution as an inconvenience to be gotten around (especially when the word "terrorism" is involved), Paul is one of the few politicians that take it seriously.

I remember the thrill I recieved when I read these libertarian ideas for the first time around 10 years ago. I read Hayek's "Road to Serfdom" and Friedman's "Free to Choose" and could hardly sleep. I hung on every word. I can't wait for those unfamiliar (or vaguely familiar) with these libertarian ideas to experience the same thrill when they read Ron Paul's "The Revolution." Once you read these ideas, you tend not to see "politics as usual" in the same way.

This book is, in my estimation, destined to be a classic...if we make it that far. As Franklin said, it is a republic only if we can keep it. If more people read and think about Ron Paul's ideas, maybe we can.

Summary of The Revolution: A Manifesto

This Much Is True: You Have Been Lied To.

  • The government is expanding.
  • Taxes are increasing.
  • More senseless wars are being planned.
  • Inflation is ballooning.
  • Our basic freedoms are disappearing.

The Founding Fathers didn't want any of this. In fact, they said so quite clearly in the Constitution of the United States of America. Unfortunately, that beautiful, ingenious, and revolutionary document is being ignored more and more in Washington. If we are to enjoy peace, freedom, and prosperity once again, we absolutely must return to the principles upon which America was founded. But finally, there is hope . . .

In THE REVOLUTION,Texas congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul has exposed the core truths behind everything threatening America, from the real reasons behind the collapse of the dollar and the looming financial crisis, to terrorism and the loss of our precious civil liberties. In this book, Ron Paul provides answers to questions that few even dare to ask.

Despite a media blackout, this septuagenarian physician-turned-congressman sparked a movement that has attracted a legion of young, dedicated, enthusiastic supporters . . . a phenomenon that has amazed veteran political observers and made more than one political rival envious. Candidates across America are already running as "Ron Paul Republicans."

"Dr. Paul cured my apathy," says a popular campaign sign. THE REVOLUTION may cure yours as well.
