The history of the Washington Redskins is what NFL Films would call "storied." The franchise, whose very name still evokes controversy in Native America, was for many years of its existence and before expansion and the Sunbelt came to pro football, the "Southern Team." Like any good Southern team, it was for whites only until the NFL forced owner George Preston Marshall to integrate his team with the likes of Bobby Mitchell in the early sixties.
As this comprehensive book details, the Redskins have had more than their fair share of characters, from Sonny Jurgenson, and Billy Kilmer to Joe Don Looney and John Riggins. Riggins once told Justice Sandra Day O'Connor at a White House dinner, "Loosen up Sandy baby." Looney, who lived up to his name was one of few players to go from the NFL to Vietnam and back again. He once hid under a pile of parkas to avoid returning to the field during a game.
This coffee table book has it all-all the stats, all the players, all the history (good and bad.) It will be a great addition to any Skins fan's library.
Book Review: An Indispensable Resource for the True Redskins Fan Summary: 5 Stars

Well-Written and Well-Organized, The Redskins Encyclopedia brings to life the history of this storied franchise from its beginnings in 1932 through the 2006 season. The first part of this book is a chronology of the history of the team, with each season thoughtfully reviewed and analyzed. The second part explores the individuals that made the teams great over the years, with relatively brief (ranging from a couple of paragraphs to a couple of pages), but interesting biographies. The book wraps up with an appendix that is a stats junky's dream. This book would make a superb gift for any Redskins fan. Many books of this type get caught up in the smallest and most pointless details, for lack of enough substance to write about. In this case, the author had plenty of material to work from and did well in his choice of subjects. This book was written by a true fan of the team and will please Redskin fans of any generation.
Book Review: Everything I want to know, plus a whole lot more Summary: 5 Stars
I had a party for the 'skins/Seahawk playoff game. One of my friends noticed an old poster I have from the 80's. It is Hogs Night Out and was created after we won Super Ball XVII. She asked me who was sitting down. Well, of course, I had no idea so I thought I'd go upstairs and log onto the computer to find it. But then I realized The Redskins Encyclopedia was sitting right in front of me so I thought I see if I can get the answer in there.
In less than one minute I was looking at a copy of the picture that was on the poster. Of course, it listed all the players names, and we found that Rick Walker is seated. Above the picture we found out why they were called the hogs, as well as finding out about the other subgroups from the time. To the left is a chart listing all the players from Super Bowl XVII and when and how they got to be 'skins.
In this day of technology, anything is available somewhere on the internet. But, if you are a 'skins fan, The Redskins Encyclopedia will let you easily find what you want, and then give you the rest of the story. I love it.

My Nephew Noah is headed for his 13th birthday. For anyone who is jewish, they know that a 13th year old Birthday is also his Bar Mitzvah. Noah does not llike to read books, but he is a BIG Washington Redskins fan. So instead of getting him a gift he would not enjoy, I am getting him another copy of this.
This book is a complete volume with game by game wrap up of the Redskins. From their humble begiinning to the last season NFL wildcard team. This volume gives the reader the back story of the team and keeps you interested. The real Redskins fans will love this as well as the non Redskin fans on your list...It is worth to get this book for all the special football fans on your list.
If you know Noah, dont tell him what i am getting him! Lets keep it our secret

Book Review: A Fantastic Book For The Redskins Fan Summary: 5 Stars

During my formative years, we watched a lot of football, but the majority centered around the New England (then Boston) Patriots and some college teams. I loved the game, but didn't know much about some of the other teams that were out there.
Having read this book, I can safely say that there is probably nothing I do not now know about the Redskins. Early history, statistics, coaches, players...you name it and you can find it in this book. The pictures were great, and although some could have been color, the majority were probably taken in black and white to begin with.
An excellent book and reference for the football fan in your life, this will surely be an appreciated gift at Christmas
