Book Reviews of The Red HeartBook Review: A Tear Jerker Summary: 5 Stars
This is the second book I've read by Thom and I found it very enjoyable, despite the saddening subject throughout the entire book. The time and place comes to life and the characters are vivid. You really feel heart wrenched as you read this book, first for the Slocums and their lost relative, then for the natives who adopted Frances and made there her own. Reading any novel that discusses Native Americans causes me great sadness, since the stories of their lives after European invasion is nothing but murder, rape, thievery and displacement. In all honesty, the natives should have killed us all off in the mid 1600's when they had the chance. The Natives are good people, as the natives in the story are, and they deserved the peace and land that were rightfully theirs. This is a good book, but keep some tissues nearby.
Book Review: Red Heart Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the best books I have read. And I did research while reading it and this is a true story. I am really dissapointed in the way the US government treated the Indians by stealing their land, burning their villages, raping and murdering their women and children. It is awesome what Frances Slocum endured with her new Indian family. I have just a big sad feeling in my heart for the awful way Thomas Jefferson, and Harrison were such criminals in the matters concerning the Indians and their homelands. I will never think of the early armies, generals, and presidents of that era in the same way. Mr. Thom is one of the best authors I have ever read. He puts you right inside the story and makes you feel that you are living it yourself. I also loved reading "Follow the River".
Book Review: A captivating book. Summary: 5 Stars
I am a Slocum decendent. My gggrandmother's name was also Frances Slocum. (not the Frances in the book) I found this book by accident while searching for books on the Slocum's and truely enjoyed reading about a very distant cousin. This book also helped to change my thoughts about Native Americans, although not negative, it gave me a new understanding of the Native American's due to the fact that all I knew of them came from old cowboy movies. Thank you Mr. Thom for helping me to understand and for helping me to see "to be an Indian wasn't cowboys and indians". You also helped me to know some history behind one branch of the "Slocum" family tree. Deborah Jones
Book Review: A fascinating taste of historical novel Summary: 5 Stars
The Red Heart has introduced me to many Indian tribes and their customs. The ceremony for the good crops is lovely, strong and similar to Christian prayers for the bounty of the land. The heroine, a 6 year-old girl abducted by the raiding Indians is well received and loved in her new home. She is trying to remember her old life in a loving Quaker family and her English vocabulary, but she adapts well to the Leneh people and their language. Have not completed the book yet and I am interested to see if she remains with her Indian captors or escapes to go "home". This is an interesting story for teens and adults.
Book Review: untitled Summary: 5 Stars
As a student of Native American history, I was pleased to find that Mr. Thom has done his research thoroughly. The eradication attempts of the Native Peoples by various administrations are well documented(although sometimes you really have to dig deep to find it). I continue to marvel at the will and hold in the highest esteem these people who would not let their culture die. Mr. Thom makes the characters "come alive". I felt the cold, the warmth of the fire and the love and caring of these people for all living things. I recommend this book to everyone.
