Book Reviews of The Purpose Driven LifeBook Review: What a WONDERFUL journey! I highly recommend it..., Summary: 5 Stars
I am only on day 7, (I just love getting up early to read each new chapter), and I am gaining so much knowledge of what it means to have a personal relationship with God. After reading each chapter in, "The Purpose Driven Life", I meditate on it, then journal in my thoughts and feelings about it in, "The Purpose Driven Life Journal".
I have not been a member of the church life for the past 9 years, I was a very dedicated member before my move, loved our Preacher (Love you & miss you Ray!) at the First Baptist in South Carolina. However when we moved here and started looking for a church that was welcoming we had no luck in finding one.
I have 5 children, and want them to worship the Lord, but I was/wont take them to a church that is, "Hell, Fire & Brimstone", which is all that we found in the nearly 10 churches we visited here.
I personally believe that your relationship with the Lord should be one based on "LOVE" not "FEAR". And teaching my children that God is to be feared, instead of God is a loving God, and He will forgive you when you fall short of the Glory of God, is not worth having a church to go to. Don't get me wrong, I teach my children right from wrong, I read to them from the Bible regularly. They love God, and the Bible. And every Christian that attends a church that knows my children, including their teachers, go on and on about how loving and well mannered they are.
To get to my point about the book, since I have been reading it, I have lived every moment of everyday thinking about the Lord, and how my words, actions & thoughts are seen by God. And thus, I am living a very spiritual relationship with the Lord, more so then I had before the book. And I think, hope, (crossing my fingers), I have found a church that I want my family to start worshiping in. And that in itself is miraculous for me!
This wonderful book has made me want to be a better person, and want to please God more than I ever imagined possible! Do I agree with every word Rick Warren says, no, but I am craving God's word more than I have in my whole 35 years of life. I am looking for a church for me and my family to be a part of. And, I am eagerly trying to find out what my purpose that God has in store for me.
As some of the other reviews mention, rather harshly I might add, I too thought that Rick was only in this for the money. But even before I went on-line tonight and did some research on him, and found out that he gives most of his profit to charity, I was getting so much out of his book, that it didn't matter to me. Because as long as I am reading something that helps me understand what makes God happy, and by reading it, I try hard to please Him with every fiber in my being, then I would highly recommend the book to anyone who wants to get closer to God, and find their purpose that He has for them.
But now that I have found out that he gives 90% of his earnings to charity, I am going to buy every book from him that I can get my hands on! And I encourage you to do the same!
Don't take my word for it, borrow it from the library to sample it for yourself, if your not ready to purchase it just yet.
May you all find peace on your journey...
God Bless you Rick Warren, you have did so much for me, and apparently so many others. God will have a wonderful place in the Heaven's for you! I can't wait to finish your teachings in this series. I was purchasing 3 other books of yours tonight, when I decided that I would right my thoughts about your teachings. I do hope my review does you justice!
Oh and here is a copy of the findings I came across, to those who doubt Rick's intentions:
About the Author
Rick Warren is often called "America's most influential spiritual leader." He founded Saddleback Church in Orange County, California, which is now one of the largest and best-known churches in the world. He also founded the Purpose Driven Movement, a network of tens of thousands of churches from all denominations in 160 countries. He has trained over 350,000 pastors worldwide. Calling him a "spiritual entrepreneur," Forbes magazine said, "If Warren's ministry was a business it would be compared with Dell, Google, or Starbucks in impact." Rick and Kay Warren give away 90 percent of the profits from their books to charitable causes, including their global P.E.A.C.E. plan and Acts of Mercy, which services those infected with and affected by AIDS.
Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.

Summary of The Purpose Driven LifeAnother Landmark Book by Rick Warren. You are not an accident. Even before the universe was created, God had you in mind, and he planned you for his purposes. These purposes will extend far beyond the few years you will spend on earth. You were made to last forever! Self-help books often suggest that you try to discover the meaning and purpose of your life by looking within yourself, but Rick Warren says that is the wrong place to start. You must begin with God, your Creator, and his reasons for creating you. You were made by God and for God, and until you understand that, life will never make sense. This book will help you understand why you are alive and God's amazing plan for you---both here and now, and for eternity. Rick Warren will guide you through a personal 40-day spiritual journey that will transform your answer to life's most important question: What on earth am I here for? Knowing God's purpose for creating you will reduce your stress, focus your energy, simplify your decisions, give meaning to your life, and, most importantly, prepare you for eternity. The Purpose Driven Life is a blueprint for Christian living in the 21st century---a lifestyle based on God's eternal purposes, not cultural values. Using over 1,200 scriptural quotes and references, it challenges the conventional definitions of worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and evangelism. In the tradition of Oswald Chambers, Rick Warren offers distilled wisdom on the essence of what life is all about. This is a book of hope and challenge that you will read and re-read, and it will be a classic treasured by generations to come. The spiritual premise in The Purpose-Driven Life is that there are no accidents---God planned everything and everyone. Therefore, every human has a divine purpose, according to God's master plan. Like a twist on John F. Kennedy's famous inaugural address, this book could be summed up like this: "So my fellow Christians, ask not what God can do for your life plan, ask what your life can do for God's plan." Those who are looking for advice on finding one's calling through career choice, creative expression, or any form of self-discovery should go elsewhere. This is not about self-exploration; it is about purposeful devotion to a Christian God. The book is set up to be a 40-day immersion plan, recognizing that the Bible favors the number 40 as a "spiritually significant time," according to author Rick Warren, the founding pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, touted as one of the nation largest congregations. Warren's hope is that readers will "interact" with the 40 chapters, reading them one day at a time, with extensive underlining and writing in the margins. As an inspirational manifesto for creating a more worshipful, church-driven life, this book delivers. Every page is laden with references to scripture or dogma. But it does not do much to address the challenges of modern Christian living, with its competing material, professional, and financial distractions. Nonetheless, this is probably an excellent resource for devout Christians who crave a jumpstart back to worshipfulness. --Gail Hudson
