Book Review: Wow, I was blown away!
Summary: 5 Stars
I thought this book was absolutely AMAZING! It made me smile, it made me cry, it made me feel, and it made me think. And it was REALLY well written.
Thus, now, coming to this Amazon page, I can't quite understand some of the lukewarm or even bad reviews it got. Maybe people just didn't understand what the book was trying to say, with its subtle nuances and allegorical messages. I also suspect there might be some hardcore religious readers who didn't appreciate the character's questioning of religion and what it means to be good or faithful or right. This book wasn't critical of God or anything, but it did highlight the way that religious zealotry, especially in cults, can sometimes get out of hand and hurt people, or worse, play a devastating role in world politics and international relations, and lead to huge destruction. We've seen it happen before--in our modern age, and in historical times, from the Crusades through to the Inquisition through to the Holocaust through to September 11 2001, all examples of where people took religion and used it for their own means, contorting its message and using it as an excuse to hurt people. It's important for kids to read a book like this, one that teaches you that you should not take everything on face value and believe everything you hear, but that you should THINK things through, and do what's REALLY right, not just what some people say is right.
Oh dear, I hope my review hasn't made this book sound like a boring lecture on morals and the dangers of cults! It's actually a really lively book, a page-turner, with lots of animals and kids and other great characters. Thoughtful, intelligent, open-minded kids should enjoy it. Thoughtful, intelligent, open-minded adults should too.
