Book Reviews of The Promise

Book Review: The Promise
Summary: 3 Stars

Michael Hillyard, heir of a prosperous New York corporation, is in love with an orphaned artist, Nancy McAllister. His mother, Marion, is a steel-eyed woman who is determined to have the best for her son and the company, and she does not favor the relationship between Michael and Nancy. They make a promise that they will never say goodbye to each other. One day, Michael and Nancy drive off to elope, but a horrible accident happens, leaving Michael and his friend hurt and Nancy with her face destroyed. In attempt to get rid of the girl, Marion offers a new life for Nancy: She will send the girl to a plastic surgeon in San Fransisco to repair her face if Nancy promises never to contact Michael. Realizing there is no hope left, Nancy agrees, and for the next two years, she lives in San Francisco and takes on a new identity. Marion tells Michael that Nancy died, and for the next two years, he becomes a workaholic to numb the pain in his heart. The question remains: Will Michael and Nancy ever reunite?

Good plot line, but I wish the story could have been a little longer and complex. Many times, it felt like "This happened. Next thing you know, this happened" ... at times, a little dry. The ending could have been better because all the events leading up to it were nerve-wracking and exciting, but the conclusion felt unfinished and truncated. I had some unanswered questions in the end...

The Promise is my first Danielle Steel book, and if all of her books are like this one, I may have second thoughts on picking up another one of her books.

Book Review: I Am Still Reading, But
Summary: 3 Stars

Why in the world are there so many grammatical and spelling errors in this book? Is the real copy this horrible or is it just the Kindle version? The story seems okay but it is getting ridiculous when "right" is spelled "rigjht". It makes the author look dumb. I read The Cottage too and it was not grammatically correct. Punctuation was missing, misspelled words, words used in the wrong context, and run on sentences. I love the story lines so far but this is the last Danielle Steele novel I will buy until they fix the issues. Very disappointing since I paid for these books.

**Edit** 9/21/2010 I just finished this book amd I have to say that it was easily one of the best stories I have read. So romantic. The characters were so likeable or able to be hated. I would have loved to have given this book a 5 but the typo's were too much.

Book Review: Run-on Sentences
Summary: 3 Stars

I read a number of Danielle Steele books a decade ago but then stopped and couldn't remember the reason. Her newest books are so badly written, I am surprised they are even published, but that was not the case back then. So I took the advise of a number of readers who loved one of her earlier books and read The Promise.

Now I remember why I stopped reading her books. Every third or fourth sentence begins with AND or BUT.

The plot was interesting but too simplistic and predictable. It had potential, but I didn't feel it lived up to it.

And I agree with the reviewers who said it was unreasonable that he didn't try to find out where his beloved was buried, nor read any accounts of the accident.

Book Review: Good But not Great and Get rid of the FOUL language!
Summary: 3 Stars

The premise of the story is profound. Unfortunately, the execution is shallow. In typical Steel style the ending was wrapped up abruptly in a two page chapter that left this reader dissatisfied. And can't Miss Steel write about normal people...people who aren't rich.....people who aren't born with a silver spoon in their mouth?? Can't she write without using dirty and obscene language?? All that aside, Steel could create masterpieces but, alas, this is not one of them. It's o.k. but not great. But then, reading Steel is a guilty pleasure and one doesn't need to look for great literature. Great beach reading.

Book Review: The Promise was written AFTER the movie
Summary: 3 Stars

While this is a decent book (yes, it does have plot holes you can drive a truck through), it IS NOT Danielle Steel's original work.

The Promise was a screenplay written by Garry Michael White. Danielle Steel was hired to write the movie novelization based on the movie's script.

Not sure if later book editions show this, but early book editions clearly state that it is a novelization based upon the screenplay by Garry Michael White right on the front cover.
