Book Reviews of The Promise

Book Review: A favorite for many, many years ...
Summary: 5 Stars

I remember the very first time I read The Promise. I was young, single, and in love, and I was traumatized by the accident and deception that broke apart this young couple who were so much in love.

A set of carnival beads buried under a rock in the sand, a promise made, seemed to hold this couple on a steadfast course that none could disrupt. But once the accident happened, a deception changed the course of their lives. One thought the other dead. The other thought herself betrayed by a lover who could not stand with her in her time of need. And they both tried to rebuild their lives.

And yet, there was a piece missing, a piece of their lives before, buried under the rock. They had both made a lifelong promise, and they were both rebuilding their lives with that one thing holding them back. Their love was there, waiting for them to find one another and their love once again.

But much stood in their way ... and neither of them was the innocent child from the days of their first love for one another.

Of all of Danielle Steele's books, this is the one that for me has stood the test of time. I know every detail, I love every part of this book.

Perhaps others will not like it so much because it isn't the epic that some of Danielle Steele's later books became, but I love it just because of that issue. If you have never read this one of her early books, you are missing a precious jewel.

Book Review: Love Story Danielle Steel style in San Francisco
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the only Danielle Steel novel I will ever read. It's got her signature drama but the story is just plain good. The Promise has all the elements: forbidden love affair, tragic elopement, 3000 mile separation, a lovelorn architect and a reinveted artist in San Francisco. When Nancy McAllister leaves Boston to have a plastic surgeon reconstruct her face ... she assume a whole new life as Marie Adamson complete with a new voice, body, career, and lover. Everything on the outside changes except her love for Michael Hillyard. She keeps waiting for him to find her not knowing that his mother told him she was dead. Two years pass and a medical building project brings Michael to California. When Marie/Nancy comes face-to-face with Michael again .... you can't help but want to tell him her real identity. Although a bit dated, melodramatic, and typical 70's American romance .... this is a good summer loving read. Steel couldn't write this story today. Doctors can't get involved with patients, at least not legally, and if someone told me that a person close to me died, I'd want to see proof. Nonetheles, if you want dewey romance that sounds irrational at times, indulge!

Book Review: Danielle Steel - The only Author who can touch my heart
Summary: 5 Stars

Hi everyone,
I have collected all the books that Danielle Steel has written
and each and everyone has touched my heart and soul in someway.
To think I have to wait for her books to be published in paperback because I don't have the space to collect them in hard
back is somewhat frustrating. It was wonderful to think that some
one like Danielle would give us her readers an insight into her
private world when she wrote "His bright light" which is about her son who died at his own hands,I found it touching and a sign to me of her being a genuine person who believes that out of something so painful she could help just one person and possibly
save that person or family from similar pain. I recommend all her
books and hope you the people get something out of all of them like I did.

Book Review: The Promise Pays Off
Summary: 5 Stars

Most of Danielle Steel's books are schlocky and clumsily written. However, I read them anyway. I read this book over 25 years ago and loved it. It was my first ever romance novel, and I read it from cover to cover in one night. Since then, I've read hundreds of romances, and I can accuse Steel of creating my romance addiction. Her earlier longer length books are much better than the novellas she dashes off now. Along with The Promise, I recommend Palomino, Thurston House, The Ring, and Family Album.

Other romance writers that I think are ten times better are: Amanda Quick (AKA Jayne Ann Krentz), Susan Elizabeth Phillips, LaVyrle Spencer, Katherine Sutcliffe, Sandra Brown, Laura Kinsale, Jill Marie Landis, Judith McNaught, Fern Michaels, etc.

Book Review: If you read ONE Danielle Steel book... Read this one!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been skeptical of Danielle Steel all my reading life. After all, she seems to release new books like how some people dish out business cards! I didn't pick up this book until a friend ranted and raved about it. Well, this book made me a fan. My first DS book and she won me over. This book just got me by the heart and clamped on it. Wow, this is a wonderful book and I'd recommend it to anyone, especially anyone who's weary of Daniel Steel. I love the story of Nancy and Michael from page 1 and I was glued to the pages till the very end. And I loved the ending, tears just sprung up and rolled down my cheeks. I read the ending 5 times and wished it didn't end. This is a truly a masterpiece.
