Book Review: A whole new type of vampire mythology!
Summary: 5 Stars
Douglas Clegg, when he was first writing this story, told us who were part of his mailing list that he wanted to create an entirely new type of vampire mythology, and I think he has succeeded brilliantly. I had received the ultra-limited, signed, numbered first edition and read it way back when; I just now bought a new hard-cover so I could re-read it and not mess up my "fancy" edition and I had forgotten just how amazing this story is. In the Vampyricon, vampires are cursed - they were originally very powerful, practically immortal and had the ability to shape-shift, but since being cursed, they only lived about 100 years, and could not shape-shift or fly. When a young man named Aleric is turned, he turns out to be the vampires' "messiah" - the Maz-Sherah - who would find the Priest of Blood and bring them back their power.
The book is in multiple sections. I, personally, consider it into four parts - the first is Aleric becoming Falconer, while he is a boy and first gains his position in the Baron's household. Then when he becomes a man, after he is sent off to fight in the Crusades. Then he becomes a vampire, after Pythia changes him. And finally he becomes the Maz-Sherah.
The thing is, with the Vampyricon, that it is INCREDIBLY dense and complex, and a single reading or a reading that is done without a great deal of attention, will NOT end up with a person really understanding what is going on. I've read it twice now and I'm still pretty unclear on a lot of things. But this isn't a bad thing - I enjoy the fact that I can go back and re-read it and discover new ideas, hidden nuances and multiple meanings to the words. I am set to read the second book in the series, finally, and I am looking forward to it.
I can DEFINITELY recommend this to anyone who enjoys vampires, medieval mythology, epic sagas or just a generally well-written story. Doug is a master story teller and you will NOT be disappointed!
