Book Reviews of The Power Presenter: Technique, Style, and Strategy from America's Top Speaking Coach

Book Review: Why you want to become a more effective presenter and how to do it.
Summary: 5 Stars

Most of us have to stand up in front of others and speak. We feel anxiety whether it is a group of a half-dozen friends or an auditorium of hundreds or thousands. This fear is rooted in our lack of knowledge of how to present effectively and our insecurity about our ability to come across well. Jerry Weissman is a professional presentations coach and provides you with the basics of his sound and learnable method in this most helpful book. Of course, if you want to become a top quality presenter you will want to also engage Mr. Weissman's services (or some other presentations coach) to help you master the skills you need and build your confidence that you are doing things right. Beware that not all coaches are created equal. The preface of this book provides a couple of pages on the right and wrong way to coach presentations. However, even without a personal coach, this book can help you significantly improve your ability to present wherever you are on that continuum now.

I think the key to the book and the success of Weissman's method is his focus on helping you develop your own successful presentation style that grows out of your personal speaking style. Yes, you will have to learn new skills and abandon your favorite crutches. But in the end you will be much better off because you will be more effective in your presentations.

The book begins by using case studies of Cisco and Isalon systems and two weeks on an IPO roadshow tour to demonstrate that practical value of speaking and delivering your message well and the costs of doing it carelessly. The book has fourteen relatively brief chapters and all contain case studies illustrating the author's points. He also includes photos, graphs, charts, and other illustrations to help you grasp and retain what he is telling you.

He shows you why your body language and your vocal inflections actually matter more than the words you say when you give presentations. You will also learn how to create audience empathy rather than putting up a wall and appearing defensive and weak. We are all nervous and there are common body reactions we use that we are largely unaware of that signal the audience just how we feel. Weissman also shows you how to prepare your presentation, why you can be a power presenter even if you lack personal charisma, how to organize your butterflies so they "fly in formation", how to use your body language to add to your message rather than detract from it, and why your vocal cadence matters. He then uses people like Winston Churchill, JFK, Martin Luther King, Jr., Ronald Reagan, and others to show you how the masters do it. There is even a chapter on what we can learn from Barack Obama's speaking ability. While this is off point, I do have to say that I find Barack Obama to be a very unpersuasive speaker and awfully poor at off the cuff remarks. But I also recognize that I am in the vast minority in this opinion.

The last few chapters cover how to synch graphics with your presentation, how to use them to strengthen your narrative, Weissman's Power Presentation Pyramid (Story, graphics, delivery, tools, and Q&A).

I really believe that this book can help you move from being unaware of your presentation style and effectiveness to becoming more aware and much improved. Weissman always illustrates his points by pointing to examples we have all seen in the media (or can see in clips on his website). This makes his writing even more compelling. While you may not enjoy getting up in front of a group, this book will help you understand what you need to do and feel more confident in doing it.

Again, if you want to get to professional quality you will either have to have vast native ability or get a great coach. Err on the side of using a coach because most of us overrate our native talent in most everything. Being effective is most often the result of hard work, and Weissman lays out the foundation for you to begin that work in becoming a more effective presenter.
