Timed to coincide with the Police's reunion tour, Lynn Goldsmith's "The Police: 1978-1983" is a visual history of The Police's rise to fame and Goldsmith's close working relationship with the band is apparent throughout. As in her other books like 'Photo Diary', Goldsmith invites you to submerge yourself in the world of the superstars of rock - there are photos of Sting jumping rope and going to the movies, of Copeland roller-skating, of all of them recording and goofing around on Montserrat. And, of course, true to Goldsmith's style, there are shots of the band in makeup - looking good, silly, and odd.
The book opens with an introduction by Phil Sutcliffe, a British music journalist who was instrumental in the formation of the band, and closes with Goldsmith's photo-montage of singer-bassist Sting, made up of some 2,000 shots of individual shots of each band member and shots of the group. "The Police: 1978 - 1983" has another bonus - twenty-five percent of Goldsmith's royalties go to Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, an organization that funds music programs for children, and donates instruments to schools.
Goldsmith's fantastic book takes you on a historic ride that redefined popular music - a guilty pleasure that should be enjoyed by any fan.
