Book Reviews of the The Plot Against AmericaCustomer Review: Clueless About America First Summary: 1 StarsMr. Roth has always been a fine writer. However, in this case he's taking on a topic about which he obviously knows very little. Roth's story idea is that in a fictionalized 1940 election, America was given a choice between the incumbent, Roosevelt, and the mid-western populist Charles Lindburgh. Would that such was the case! I could only wish that Americans had been given a choice between the secret warmonger Roosevelt (read "Day of Deceit") and a real defense-oriented america-first patriot like Lindburgh (instead of the republican warmonger Wilkie).
Mr. Roth goes on to savage the reputations of several other mid-western and western populists of the era; it is as if he believes that nothing good grows from the soil west of the Hudson and his golden boyhood in Brooklyn. Believe it or not, there was a time when the antiwar position was the populist position and the "red" states were the epicenter of the idea that the US should mind its own business in the world and not interfere in the affairs of others. How one wishes for the return of patriotic, populist, antiwar leaders to take back the republic from the internationalist imperialists Mr. Roth idolizes! For a better "fictionalized" history of the time, read "The Golden Age" by Gore Vidal.
