Book Reviews of The Pilgrim's Progress (Dover Thrift Editions)

Book Review: Warm and encouraging.
Summary: 5 Stars

It is said that C. H. Spurgeon (known as the Prince of Preachers) read this book over 100 times and regarded Bunyan as being so saturated with Bible that he would probable bleed it. This is easily seen in the books text where here and there we can distinctly recognize biblical sayings (that are fitted into the story seamlessly).

For instance, "If he that goeth about like a roaring lion comes by, you will certainly become prey to his teeth" (43) and "The Soul of the Sluggard desires, and hath nothing" (149). Those words that are from the bible are kindly italicized for our confirmation.

It is also said that Hudson Taylor used translations of The Pilgrim's Progress to reach out in Asia. This testifies to the texts ability to be easily grasped and appreciated the contents of the book. It's a strait forward yet powerful allegory of the Christian walk and all its trials and joys. It is quite the "Christian Oddysy", and I found the whole book encouraging and the ending warm.

The book is a two part book, of which the second part I preferred, though maybe it is because by that time I was more accustomed to the language. The first part follows Christian's pursuit of the Celestial City, and the second follows his wife's and children's pursuit, which is joined my many other great men like Mr Great-heart and Mr Valiant-for-truth.

The wording of this is (obviously) not what most of us are used to, though it is easier to read than Shakespeare. Make sure you decide if you want a modernized version or the original. I would recommend the original; it is good for us all to expand our reading. It may be slow at first, but you will get used to it, thus preparing yourself for more old writings in the future :).

Here is a quote from my favorite section, "Now mercy began to be very impatient, for each minute was as long to her as an hour, wherefore she prevented Christiana from a fuller interceding for her, by knocking at the Gate herself. And she knocked then so loud, that she made Christiana to start. Then said the Keeper of the Gate, who is there? and said Christiana, It is my Friend" (195).

In the words of John Bunyun, "Shall it be my Lot to go that way again, I may give those that desire it an account of what I here am silent about; mean-time I bid my Reader Adieu" (322)
God bless.

(PS. I totally found this will be a great source of online FPS aliases. I can see it now..."Mr Stand-fast has captured the flag."
