Book Review: A Beautiful and Tragic Story
Summary: 5 Stars
After seeing 'The Phantom of the Opera' on Broadway (with Hugh Panero as the Phantom - awesome!), I was intrigued with the actual story and decided to read the book. I remembered learning a little bit about this in music classes - there were skeletal remains of a disfigured man found under a Paris opera house. I wanted to explore the story more, especially to see if it may have actually happened, and bought the book right away. I must say, the story is absolutely beautiful, and in a way, tragic at the same time. As the reader, I couldn't help but empathize with Erik's (the phantom's) plight, and, even though I knew Christine couldn't end up with him, still felt incredibly sad for the phantom and the outcome. This book is definitely worth investing your time in. It is SO much better than the movie made recently (2004), and contains so much more substance than the movie ever did.
To summarize, this book is about an outcasted and disfigured genius, who finds solace living underneath an opera house, where he falls in love with Christine - a young singer/dancer who he takes under his wing as a sort of prot?g?e. The book follows the events that took place at the Paris Opera House - whether it really happened or not is up to you to decide..
