Book Reviews of The Perfect Recipe for Losing Weight and Eating Great

Book Review: A Delicious Realistic Approach to Weight Loss
Summary: 5 Stars

The Perfect Recipe for Losing Weight & Eating Great by Pam Anderson is a perfect cookbook if you are looking for healthy recipes that taste great. That's because Pam is not a dietician, doctor or weight loss expert promoting another austere impossible-to-stick-to diet. She is a successful cookbook writer with impressive credentials - former editor at Cook's Illustrated and contributor to Fine Cooking and USA Weekend - and talent for creating tasty recipes, who lost 40 pounds without sacrificing her love for great tasting food. I've been a fan of her cookbooks and approach to cooking for years.

The Perfect Recipe for Losing Weight & Eating Great was released in 2008 and somehow it slipped past my cookbook radar. Several months later I saw a picture of Pam in USA Weekend and I couldn't get over her transformation. She was slimmer, and looked years younger. I immediately wanted the inside scoop and rushed out to buy the book. I am so glad I did. It's become one that I turn to regularly.

The recipe portion of The Perfect Recipe for Losing Weight & Eating Great begins on page 41. Before that Pam gives the details on what motivated her to lose more than 40 pounds and how she did it. I love that instead of going on another yo-yo diet, she devised a plan of her own that met her unique requirements. She took a gradual approach she could live with for the long term that didn't leave her feeling hungry and deprived. Hers was a true body-mind-soul approach that included counseling, self-care and modifying her relationships in addition to changes in her eating and exercise habits.

I know it's not sexy and is hard to read when all you want to do is lose weight fast, but this is just the kind of gradual individualized approach that all the experts confirm results in lasting change.

In the book, Pam explains that she began thinking about losing weight two years before she actually did anything and her positive changes started simply with an extra walk. Her plan allowed her to eat all the foods she loved - filling soups, satisfying salads, tasty pizzas, hearty pastas, tea time treats, before dinner nibbles, wine and some desserts. In time she found a satisfying rhythm that nourished her inside and out. She lost 42 pounds over 8 months and has kept it off.

Keys to Pam's Weight Loss Plan included:

Establishing new normal eating patterns.
Increased exercise (walking/jogging/running) and trips to the gym during her weight loss phase.
Making time for herself.
Getting rid of old clothes when they got too big.
Making a practice of stopping eating when she was satisfied.
Minimal weigh-ins. Instead she let the fit of her clothes be her guide. Every 10 pound loss meant a smaller size.
More rituals - meditation, spiritual reading, scheduled eating, development of a built-in mechanism that tells her when to stop eating.
Taking time to trust you have changed at your core and won't revert back to "old behaviors" even if your "little voice" tries to tell you otherwise.
The recipe portion of The Perfect Recipe for Losing Weight & Eating Great is divided into chapters for breakfast, lunch, tea time, before dinner nibbles, quick dinners and desserts.

The breakfast chapter includes recipes for smoothies, yogurt parfaits, granola, oatmeal, grits, breakfast pita pizzas, multigrain pancakes, eggs, omelets, and crustless quiches.

The lunch chapter has templates for constructing big lunch in a bowl soups and salads. The soups have become a suppertime staple for us, since we like to eat lighter dinners several times a week.

Tea time treats include cookies, bars and muffins that are sweet and satisfying. I love Pam's mini muffins and biscotti.

Do you find yourself snacking way too much while getting dinner ready? Pam's suggestions for before dinner nibbles - spiced nuts, seasoned pumpkin seeds, homemade pita chips, and deviled eggs - can take the edge off your hunger enough to prevent this common dietary land mine.

The chapter on quick dinners is full of variety. There are recipes for flat bread pizzas, pastas, seared & sauced meats and fish, baked fish & vegetables and grilled dinners. There are also great recipes for grilled, roasted, and steam/saute vegetables.

I introduced my sister to the flatbread when we visited her in Denver a few weeks ago and she has made it several times since. The crust has no yeast so it stirs together in minutes and bakes up thin and crispy. Although, several great topping combinations are provided, you can really make it with whatever suits your fancy. It's one of those easy tasty recipes you will find yourself turning to again and agin.

The books ends with tasty desserts that are satisfying without being over-indulgent and include comforting things like chocolate and cherries, berry sauce with sour cream, pudding, mini tarts and cheese cake.

There are 16 pages of beautiful food pictures that precede the recipes, but no glossy pictures of each recipe, if that is a requirement for you. There are also 50 tips for losing weight interspersed throughout the book.

If you want to lose weight while eating great tasting food you owe it to yourself to check out The Perfect Recipe for Losing Weight & Eating Great. It has been a great help to me.
