Book Reviews of The Overlook (Harry Bosch)Book Review: A minor entry in the series, but still worthwhile Summary: 4 Stars
This is a shorter and faster read than one generally expects from Michael Connelly, but it still delivers. An execution style murder soon develops into a harrowing case of stolen radioactive substances. Bosch as usual knocks heads with the LAPD brass, the FBI, and his new partner.Rachel Walling is back in Bosch's life to complicate matters. One conflict with an overly zealous FBI agent and a later conflict with a wrong-headed police captain seem a bit over-the-top even for Bosch, but they are still fun reading. A more realistic conflict is between the older and experienced Bosch and his capable but youthful partner who still has much to learn if only he will realize it. This has the wit, the action, and the suspense but not quite the depth of the previous books. Still one to read and enjoy.
Book Review: Good, But Could Have Been More Summary: 4 Stars
The plotline was very good, but the shortness of the book left me wanting more of the old Harry Bosch. I missed the melancholy time in front of the stereo at home pondering the case, his life, the problems with his wife/girlfriend, etc. This book was a quick slam, bam, thank you reader. I miss the interaction with his partner - he has a new one this time, but nothing there is developed; it's an after thought.
The FBI and LAPD were again at each other and the mystery was worth the read, but I can't help but think that something is up with Connelly. I felt like a good story could have been even better. I just missed the the complexities of the previous stories - before "Echo Canyon". And with the plotline that he had going, this could have been a superb book.
Book Review: Fun, fast-moving, interesting Summary: 4 Stars
The Overlook seems to have gotten mixed reviews but I think its baggage of being originally a newspaper story released in parts (the novel was expanded and deepened a bit) has made fans go into it with the idea that they wouldn't like it. No, it's not the strongest in the series but its pretty exciting in that it's a mystery that's solved in pretty close to a day. The story, involving terrorism, feels very contemporary, and the mystery's ending is pretty surprising, if a little bit unbelievable.
It's an exciting entry in the series and while probably not the best place to start the series it's fun to see Bosch in a story that's more fast-paced and thrilling than usual.
Book Review: An Excellent Crime Thriller Summary: 4 Stars
Michael Connelly strikes once again!! "The Overlook" is a crisp, well written crime novel that grabs the reader quickly and does not let go until the end. The story takes place in less than a day, and in many ways feels like an episode of "24." (That is meant as a compliment.)
Connelly continues to develop Harry Bosch as well as agent Walling. Both are good characters playing good roles. Some reviewers have complained that the book is too short, but the truth is, I like quick reads, so that was not a problem for me.
I have now read four Connelly books, and will definitely read more. "Lincoln Lawyer" remains my favorite, but this one is a fine story.
Book Review: Entertaining but light reading Summary: 4 Stars
Without ruining the end I will say that the best part of The Overlook is the ending. There are so many red herrings in this you will never guess what the end will be all about until you're almost two pages past it. Just joking of course!
The Overlook is a fun thriller, the type you enjoy reading and are wondering yourself what will happen next. It has moments of suspense mixed with great classic detective narratives. All in all this is a great and fun book and well worth your time. This book is tremendously fun and if you read for enjoyment you will love this!
