Book Reviews of The Overlook (Harry Bosch)

Book Review: Fast pace thriller
Summary: 5 Stars

I have read many Michael Connelly books. I have never been disappointed by any of them. The Overlook holds true to my previous statement. Sure, this book may not be as elaborate as some of his other novels, but it was very well paced, had action, and kept me guessing up to nearly the very end. Harry Bosche was more appealing in this novel than in the previous ones I read. It seemed like he was more compassionate and more understanding especially towards his newly assigned rookie partner. But Bosche was still tough as nails when needed to be, and saw everything a step or two before everyone else did. This book had me turning the pages wanting to find out what would happen next. I recommend it, especially to those who aren't familiar with Michael Connelly's works or the Harry Bosche series.

Book Review: Very good Bosch
Summary: 5 Stars

The thing about the Harry Bosch series is that there isn't a book in it that is bad. The characters are some of the best conceived, real, and evil that are out there. It has to be considered one of the best of the LA crime fiction series ever. It is up there with Marlowe. As a fan, it would be nice to see about fifty more books about Harry Bosch. There is room for it too. The series started in the late middle of Harry's career, it mentions Vietnam, his earlier LAPD ventures, the youth halls. That would all make some very interesting novels. What we are witnessing with the lastest three novels is the autumn of Harry's life. While necessary to keep the series fresh, it is so sad. This is one that you just don't want to see die.

Book Review: Short with a Punch
Summary: 5 Stars

I liked this Harry Bosch novel very much and, unlike some reviewers, had no problem with the 12-hour time frame or the fact that this novel is shorter than most of the other Bosch books. This time Harry is investigating a murder that has links to terrorism, a timely subject and a good device for author Michael Connelly to use to illustrate the one-up-manship and undercutting that goes on among the various law enforcement agencies that get called in on a big case.

There is a good kicker at the end of the story too, and one that I have to admit I didn't see coming. The Overlook is a good addition to the Bosch series and I recommend it for anyone who likes an entertaining read that is also well written and features interesting characters.

Book Review: Hollywood what are you waiting for?
Summary: 5 Stars

I've read all of Michael Connelly's novels and to me he just gets better each time out. If I could go back and re-rate all my previous reviews I'd give them all 5 stars. I've realized all his books are highly enjoyable and that all the other authors I've been exposed to who write this kind of crime-fiction don't come close. There's many I can't finish.

In the "Overlook" I really did feel I knew who the killer was early on, and it didn't bother me I was right at the end. I wonder if Connelly wanted it that way?

I keep wondering who should play Harry in a movie??? Maybe Tommy Lee Jones. Linda Fiorentino as Rachel Walling. C'mon Hollywood!

Book Review: Connelly is simply the best American Mystery Writer
Summary: 5 Stars

This is only a minor degree less satisfying than his last book I read, The Coyote! To complete a book that only expands about 24 hours, and make it compelling and a joy to read, takes a real mastery of the language and the understanding of how to use the medium (book)... along with the knowledge of what makes a book a page turner. My wife was on page 37 and told me, "so early and I already do not want to put it down. You will not be disappointed. Michael Connelly is simply the best.
