Book Review: Living with Demons

The Outlaw Demon Wails (2008) is the sixth fantasy novel in the Rachel Morgan series, following For a Few Demons More. In the previous volume, Kisten and Piscary were killed. Rachel witnessed both deaths, but a forget potion has wiped out her memories of Kisten's killer. David took the focus curse and seemed all right with it.
In this novel, Rachel Morgan is a witch operating an independent runner agency with her friends Ivy and Jenks. She lives in an old church that has been resanctified in the main hall and their living area. She is still grieving from Kisten's death.
Ivy Tamwood is a living vampire. She is also Rachel's roommate. They have been living together for a year, learning how to avoid angering each other. She too is still grieving over Kisten.
Jenks is a pixie. He is married to Matalina. They have 56 children (as of the last count).
Algaliarept is a demon. Al has been after Rachel for some time now, but hasn't yet got her back to the ever-after. Yet he has marked her.
Minias is another demon. He has saved Rachel on various occasions, but not because of his concern for her. Demons are like that.
Trenton Kalamack is an elf and a member of the Cincinnati city council. Rachel has long history with him -- going back to their childhood -- but she knows that he is a murderer and a drug lord. Trent keeps coming to Rachel for oddball runner jobs and she charges him highly for them.
Ceri is a thousand year old elf and Rachel's friend. She had been Al's familiar until Rachel freed her from the demon. Now she lives with Rachel's friend Keasley.
Rynn Cormel is the new Vampire Master of the City, taking over after Piscary was killed. He had run the country after the Turn. Rachel has a copy of his book on vampire ways in the back of her closet. Ivy had given it to her when they first moved into the church.
Tom Bansen is an official with Inderland Security. Rachel knows that he is also a secret demon summoner.
In this story, Rachel is shopping for Halloween with her mother. They are in a charm shop when Al attacks her. Rachel gets her mother and the store clerk to make a circle while she fights him off. Suddenly, two other demons appear.
They seem to be trying to take out Al, but he flees before them. Then Rachel traps one in another circle and notices that it is Minias. Just before the IS officers show up, Minias works a deal with Rachel and she releases him.
The struggle has done a lot of damage to the store. When the IS officers show up, Tom tries to charge Rachel with summoning a demon in a public place. Since that is not a crime, he sticks her with the damages.
Later, Minias joins Rachel, Jenks and her mother at a coffee shop. He explains that Al has been getting out of jail every night and they have to track him down to put him back into the cell. Apparently someone is summoning Al and then releasing him without banishing him back to the ever-after.
Al also appears the next night and has a fight with Rynn. Rachel traps Al in a circle and sends him back to the ever-after. Now she has to deal with Rynn, Ivy's new master.
Trent has a new project and wants Rachel to gather some two thousand years old elven DNA from the ever-after. His bodyguard Quen -- another elf -- gets Rachel's attention and takes her to Trent. Rachel turns down the offer, but is rather tempted when Trent says it concerns Ceri.
This tale leads Rachel and her friends into a hunt for the person who is summoning Al and freeing him in this world to do damage. Rachel starts making a list of enemies and another of ways to detect summoning of demons. Ivy starts a few spreadsheets to organize her thoughts.
As usual in these novels, the plot twists and turns. You will not believe the conclusion. The next volume in this series is White Witch, Black Curse. Read and enjoy!
Highly recommended for Harrison fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of exotic magic, vampire affairs, and romantic woes. For those who have not read this series before, the initial volume is Dead Witch Walking.
