Book Reviews of The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary

Book Review: Splendid for everything but a real sanctioned tournament
Summary: 5 Stars

I play a bit of Scrabble, no where near tournament level, but I very much enjoy it. This little dictionary is absolutely indispensable and irresistible. It does not have EVERY allowable word: In this latest edition they took out many offensive words (note, in tournament play all are still allowed if they're on the official list, and if you're playing with friends, you can also agree to use any words in a more complete dictionary on hand). This dictionary also does not show words (other than if you're adding "ing", etc.) over seven letters long. Again, use a regular dictionary if you need to check on a longer word.

Note that this is a specialized dictionary. Don't buy it if you're looking for full definitions, pronunciations or etymology. This dictionary is for Scrabble players who want to know if a word can have an "s" added to it, or "ed" or "ing". Or what are the allowable two-letter words. It isn't meant to be a full dictionary, it's for people who want to figure out what letters can be added to "neu" to make an allowable word.

For this purpose, it is a splendid dictionary. Much more compact than a "real" dictionary, and much easier to check for declensions, etc. That is, if you aren't sure whether a final "e" disappears when you add "ing", the Scrabble dictionary is much easier to check than a regular dictionary where you're plowing through extraneous information. In this dictionary, you get just the quick help you need. I love it!

Book Review: No more Scrabble squabbles!
Summary: 5 Stars

Loving the Scrabble dictionary. Now there's no more sheepish looking around for a "layman's" dictionary while playing Scrabble, and many official Scrabble words are not in the regular dictionary. And no more Scrabble squabbles! This official version puts to rest any questioning looks from across the board. Who new "qat" was a word? And having learned it prior to a recent game, "qat" helped us build the board north when it was going hopelessly south. I'm having fun learning new Q, J, X and Z words for those formerly heart-sinking moments nearing the end of the game and drawing one of them. A great gift for Scrabble lovers. Nice big print, user-friendly, easy to carry to any game. With all the interest in keeping the brain healthy and sharp as we age, learning new Scrabble words and playing games and puzzles help the brain to stay agile and functional. Who knew Scrabble and this dictionary were actually good for your health!! I will be getting another to give to a friend as a gift. You simply can't play Scrabble without it!

Book Review: comparison of small and large(type) Scrabble dictionaries
Summary: 5 Stars

My pal and I play Scrabble almost every day. We had purchased the new large
print Scrabble dictionary, but it is very large.I really had trouble lifting
it, so I decided I would buy the smaller edition. I am very pleased with
my purchase. But the type IS very small. I would have found it helpful to
know type size and actual physical dimensions of this book, as well as the
other dictionary, before I bought them.
We use the dictionaries as we play, on the pretense that this will enlarge
our vocabularies. So we use them a lot.
The description should also say the edition number. Both of the dictionaries
I recently bought are fourth editions. We went through 3 of the third
edition books, and this edition has many new words.
As far as my recent purchases, I am glad to have both. There are many
strategies and tricky word uses for high-point letters and multiple vowels
in the large-print one that are not in the pocket version.

Book Review: Ratholing
Summary: 5 Stars

The Official Scrabble Players DictionaryScrabble Scrabble is a game that my family seems to have played forever. Mom always had an old Webster dictionary about twenty pounds she declared was the one we used. If you got up and had to go over and look up a maybe word she called it ratholing out an answer. I started buying smaller dictionaries for table use in the 1950s. Mom didn't like it but she used those paperback books like every one else at the table. These books are perfect for table use and at the amazon price I buy enough of each edition to have 2 on the table for each family household. Who says you have to go to Disneyland when your family gets together. Yeah and all the grandkids can spell. Sort of sink or swim.

Book Review: Useful and Fun!
Summary: 5 Stars

Beyond being useful for playing Scrabble, this book is fun. It might be nice to just have a list of new words, but the reality isn't so bad: you can spend some relaxing time just peeking through the book to find new words and what they mean. This book is worth it just for identifying the first acceptable two-letter Q/Q-without-U word, Qi. No longer must you be able to spell just Qat when you get stuck with the Q at the very end of the game without an accompanying U.

For those folks who want the "dirty" words as well, it can always be agreed in advance to use the current Webster's dictionary or whatever in addition to this book. You need to do that anyway for words with more than eight letters.
