This book is very friendly and easy to read, but it sticks really close to the best research available about birth. The best research comes from a group of number crunchers in the UK called the Cochrane Collaborative, and they analyze studies about all kinds of medical treatments -- including childbirth. Their work is sometimes called the "gold standard" of research. They look at huge numbers of studies, throw out the ones that weren't done well, and then they see if they can draw conclusions based on what is left. (Their work on childbirth is summarized in The Guide to Effective Care in Pregnancy and Childbirth, which is NOT easy to read. It's also available, chapter by chapter on [...].
These Cochrane Collaborative guys are not a bunch of hippies who have an axe to grind about birth. Still, the conclusions they draw, based on some serious number crunching, often run contrary to common practices in the US. For example, they say that women who are having a normal healthy pregnancy should not be discouraged from having home births. Also, they conclude that continuous electronic fetal monitoring can be a problem for mothers who are having normal labors. (Apparently the research shows that the monitoring does not benefit the fetus and makes other procedures, like cesareans, more likely.) This information also appears in the Lamaze book.
The Lamaze book makes the Cochrane Collaborative's information easier to understand. Its information is consistently grounded in research that's about as trustworthy as research gets -- even if that information occasionally contradicts conventional wisdom.
