In the first half of the nineteenth century a series of composers combined with the invention of the piano facilitated the development of singing as a dramatically different art form from that which went before. Here came together the lyric poetry of Goethe and Heine and the music of Schubert, Schumann and Brahms to create songs of unparalleded beauty.
In this book Ms. Gorrell describes the times and the music that was being developed in this time. It is a very nice piece of schlorship about a time when the musical world was in flux and a time that didn't last very long. It a time that was a landmark in the definition of song.
