To answer the following post...if I don't make my dogs sleep in a certain place, they'll get up in the middle of the night, get into the garbage, chew, and sometimes release their bowels on my new carpet. I definitely agree with Dr Dobson, otherwise, I would be cleaning up a big mess every morning...Ugh! I also worked at a vet clinic and had to deal with many nasty small dogs whose owners let them do what they please. They were not fun to deal with! Dr Dobson really was right to keep his dog in line, otherwise it could turn out to be a danger to others (such as us vet technicians). So YES! I would trust Dr Dobson alone with my dog! And he's right! A child will test you a lot more than a dog will!
And...when I tried the "pick your baby up everytime it cries" I couldn't put her down to sleep at night or at any time for that matter... Good thing I read Dr Dobson's advise and let her cry it out. Because, now I can put her down and she goes right to sleep nearly everytime. She also whines A LOT LESS and is a lot more compliant. And yes, kids are a battle. They constantly test their limits, even the quiet ones. **Obviously the person (who posted about the dog) does not have kids...or if they do, they don't mind letting their kids run all over them.** They have also obviously never met or listened to Dr Dobson, or they would realize what a wise, kind, and caring person he is.
I know that Dr Dobson's techniques were used on me and my siblings and we all turned out great. Spankings never taught us to hit. In fact it was quite the opposite. We were all very respectful to our parents and had wonderful loving relationships with them as well. Never once did my siblings or I even think about hitting others or using violence on others. We're all very well-rounded and stable.
What do I think about the book? I'm so glad to finally find a book that works!! I've tried all of the positive reinforcement and other alternative methods, all to no avail! My toddler would just ignore me...in one ear and out the other. This book is great at teaching old-fashioned techniques. There are so many kids these days that are disrespectful, therefore leading to drugs, violence, sex, etc. I definitely don't want my kid headed that way, so I tried this book and you wouldn't believe how well it works. She's very willing to please and respectful and it really only took my changing from the old worn-out "positive reinforcement" ways to telling her that "this is how it is". Simple as that. Dr Dobson explains many ways to go about disciplining (very little of which is about spanking). I would highly recommend this book even if your child isn't difficult. It really helps with any child!!!
