Book Reviews of The New Rules of Marketing and PR: How to Use News Releases, Blogs, Podcasting, Viral Marketing and Online Media to Reach Buyers Directly

Book Review: Power Up Your Engines!
Summary: 5 Stars

Power Up Your Engines: A must read for marketers and public relations professionals interested in learning how to leverage the potential of Web-based communication to build a personal link with your market.

David Meerman Scott, an award-winning marketing strategist and best-selling author, presents a clear, easy-to-read description of the new rules of marketing and PR and why they are effective. He attempts to capture how the Internet and social media have transformed the way companies communicate with customers. His new rules boil down to these powerful rules:

1. Content Drives Action [Give people content, not a sales pitch]
2. Marketing is more than just advertising
3. PR is more than just a mainstream media audience
4. People want authenticity, not spin
5. People want participation, not propaganda
6. New Relationship [Give people control]
7. Use Blogs [Be interactive, Be Involved, Be in the game]
8. Focus on niche markets [mass markets are going extinct]
9. Communicate with the public directly [don't depend on the middle man]
10. Accommodate Searching and Browsing

These ten rules are just a small sample of the information the author provides in the book. The world is changing rapidly as it shifts towards the Web. The author's thesis and purpose are simple: how to use news releases, blogs, podcasting, viral marketing and online media to reach buyers directly.

The book clearly delivers the message of rethinking marketing strategy and encourages organizations to create a relationship with their consumers. This book provides easy-to-understand rules to help any serious PR or marketing professional make the transition to the new rules of the industry.

The new rules are simple; marketing and PR needs to revolve around providing the consumers with content. Content drives action. Public relations no longer depends on a few key journalists to tell their story, but rather applies the new rules and reaches out to the consumers directly. Marketing no longer founded on interrupting messages to audiences, but rather thrives on building personal links with your market. The author provides revolutionary rules that help you start a profitable relationship with your buyers, winning minds and markets.

Although this book is a must read it is not without it's limitations. Scott at times, comes off evangelizing the new rules of marketing and PR a little strong, but perhaps that is one of the books strengths. The author is clearly passionate about these rules and concepts. Ranging from large cooperation's to nonprofit organizations, Scott gives solid examples for his readers to chew on. He rarely introduces a new rule without supporting evidence. This may come in the form of a testimonial, a company case study, statistics or Scott's personal experience with his own success and failures.

I would give this book a 10/10. The book is easy-to-read, well organized and written in a way that is welcoming for any skill level. I believe anyone who reads this book will agree that Scott captures the new rules of marketing and PR and equips the reader to start utilizing them. The book receives an overall 5/5 stars.
