Book Reviews of The New Rules of Lifting: Six Basic Moves for Maximum Muscle

Book Review: I like it
Summary: 5 Stars

I read this book and I largely agree with it. I like the way the exercise system works all the muscle groups at every setting with a variety of exercises across weeks and months. The system is designed to take you through an entire year of training. There are several goals you can choose such as weight loss or strength training or muscle hypertrophy and you can mix goals over time. Typically the book asks you to do whatever goal you choose for 12 weeks, but then you are free to choose another course of training. For example you can do one of the three fat loss programs for 12 weeks and then switch to one of the strength programs and then to to one of the hypertrophy programs. Within each goal, the programs are progressive fat loss 2 is more aggressive than fat loss 1 for example.

The exercises are not based on isolated muscles like biceps. It uses exercises that incorporate all the muscles of the chest or back or shoulders along with the biceps or triceps. I have been following this regimen for a few weeks now and I very much like the discipline associated with the workouts. You can just plod along making progress. The program uses free weights, body weight exercises, swiss ball exercises, and cable machine exercises, which I think is very balanced in its approach. The book contains nutrition advice and how much to eat and how to vary the diet on days you lift vs days you rest. The advice is according to the latest research, and as far as I can tell is pretty much devoid of politics and pseudo-science. So many of the programs I have read, or purchased, are by "Guru's" who claim to expertise is they have a nice physique. In a field where everybody is an expert no one knows what they are talking about, but I think Lou's book is the exception.

The book is easy to read, and can be thoroughly read in a couple of days. There is enough variation in the book to keep you in rational workouts for the rest of your life. I do the routine from my home as I have a ball and a cable machine. I use dumbbells instead of barbells since that is what I have. I had come to pretty much the same conclusions regarding multi-muscle total body workouts with free weights, ball, body weight, and cable machine as Lou does, but my workouts tended to have a greater amount of randomness as far as choosing a given exercise to do, and the number of reps and the number of sets. I tended to do several sets of many different but similar exercises like squat, dead lift, lunge, and step bench, in the same sitting. (Bit of an entendre since there is no sitting in doing those exercises.) Now I do one or two and I'm done. On the next exercise day I will get a different two, so you get variety and a little different workout for a given muscle group without over training. I am still sore after working out, but I am much less sore using this workout than I was before but I am still seeing progress

Good read, good advice, good goal oriented disciplined workouts. Good deal!!

Summary of The New Rules of Lifting: Six Basic Moves for Maximum Muscle

Ten unique programs for fat loss, muscle gain, and strength improvement for beginners and elite lifters.

Want to get more out of your workout and spend less time in the gym? Many guys devote so many hours to lifting weight yet end up with so little to show for it. In many cases, the problem is simple: They aren?t doing exercises based on the movements their bodies were designed to do. Six basic movements?the squat, deadlift, lunge, push, pull, and twist?use all of the body?s major muscles. And, more important, they use those muscles in coordinated action, the way they were designed to work.

The New Rules of Lifting, now in paperback and with more than one hundred photographs, gives you more than a year?s worth of workouts based on these six basic movements. Whether you?re a beginner, an experienced lifter looking for new challenges, or anything in between, you can mix and match the workouts to help you get bigger, stronger, and leaner. In addition, the comprehensive nutritional information provided makes The New Rules of Lifting a complete guide to reaching all your goals.

If you aren?t using The New Rules of Lifting, you aren?t getting the best possible results.
