Book Review: A southern noir novel

This mystery novel ties in a murder with the Louisiana underworld. The novel starts with the discovery of a murdered prostitute. Our hero, Dave Robicheaux is much in the mold of Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch. That motto being; either all victims matter or none matter. The powers that be want an open and shut death by overdose case. Robicheaux sees more than that. His detecting efforts get the attention not only of the underworld but the US government as well. Both parties demonstrate in no uncertain terms to get lost. This is an intriguing plot twist.
The plot is an asset to the book. The vivid descriptions of New Orleans and Louisiana are as well. I would rank his locale description up there with Nevada Barr's and C.J. Box's. I thought the complexity of character development was good with Dave Robicheaux. As other reviewers have noted his alcoholism is no mere plot hook. He gets himself into more trouble than he needs because of it.
Character development with his love interest,however, is less satisfactory. In her first two scenes there seem to be two different people. Then there's the politics. A novel's quality almost always decreases when a writer gets on the political soapbox in the novel. It never advances the plot(think the gratuitous "Porky's" type scene near the beginning) and anyone who might disagree on some point may stop reading.
However, if like location description and any type of noir novels; this read will be for you.
