This is one of the most enjoyable books I've read. It moves seamlessly as the characters grow and their lives progress. Things don't happen as you think they might, but at the same time seem destined and the natural course of human nature.

Book Review: The Namesake Book Review
Summary: 4 Stars

The title of the book, The Namesake, has a deep meaning that is threaded throughout the text. In this particular culture and family, the name that a child is given is a very important decision. It is something that will impact the person's life forever and is taken very seriously. Naming in the Indian culture is different than that of naming in the American culture. These differences are the cause of much of the conflict that is described in the book. The complex nature of the storyline is a complete contrast to the plain appearance and layout of the book. The cover displays an uncomplicated, yet attractive, design. While this design is not something to draw attention, it is one to match the simple title. There is no preface, introduction, or table of contents. Only a quote from a book mentioned within this story is given before the beginning of the book. Each section or chapter of the book is listed with only a number and sometimes a year to go along with it.

This book helped give me a better understanding of the Indian culture. At first, I was fairly confused and could not perceive why they felt they needed to do some of the things they did. But as the book went on, my respect for their culture grew. While very different from the way I grew up, it is just the way they want things to be done because that is the way they grew up and were taught. The author, Jhumpa Lahiri, did an excellent job of exposing some of the traditions and ways of life for the Indian people. She achieved a good balance between adding cultural specifics while keeping it easy enough for any audience to understand. The book in general kept me very interested. Lahiri turned what could have been a somewhat bland topic into something that I really enjoyed reading. I did not see any quotes that completely stood out in my mind. I thought that, overall, the book had a lot of depth brought through, but not in any specific quote.

My level of agreeing with the different characters changed often throughout the book. As I gained more knowledge about the culture, I started to understand the reasons they did certain things. I agreed more after I was able to comprehend the links to the culture. The book appealed to me in an emotional way. The struggles and trials these people went through in order to move to America and start a new life together were extraordinary. The strength that would have been required of them was incredible. This book taught me things about their culture that I may have never learned anywhere else. I have grown to respect other cultures more now that I can appreciate the differences between them. I learned that there is not one way that is the right way to live in a society. Depending on the culture you live in, things can be very different. And that can actually be good. The Namesake was published by Mariner Books in 2003 and the ISBN number is 0-618-48522-8.
