Book Reviews of The Mysterious Benedict Society

Book Review: Engaging Book for Grades 5 - 8
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been teaching elementary school for over 15 years now, and of all the children's books I have read absolutely none of them had as terrific opening and closing chapters as this book. Luckily, the middle chapters were equally as engaging! The Mysterious Benedict Society easily drew me in as the opening chapter introduced Reynard Muldoon, full-time orphan, genius, and social outcast. We follow Muldoon as he embarks on a quest to discover a 'great opportunity' which will enable him to 'achieve great things.' The story is very clever, and there are many puzzles and mysteries for the heroes and readers alike to discover and/or unravel as the book progresses.

A wonderful read!

Book Review: Another adult who loved this book!
Summary: 5 Stars

I picked this book up on impulse, intending to stick it on a shelf for my child to read when older. For some reason, I started reading it, and could not stop!
This author has woven a strange and completely unique tale that kept me up late, reading until I sadly came to the end. I just found out that there is another one, and I couldn't be happier. I just hope it is as unusual as the first.
I really fell in love with these characters. The care taken to slowly develop them, showing their history and complexity, drew me in completely. I cared very much about what happened to them.
I really can't wait for my child to be old enough for this one. It is just top notch.

Book Review: Cute, fun, charming read
Summary: 5 Stars

Charming. That is the perfect word for this book. Absolutely charming. A new novel, just come out this year, TMBS is quite hilarious and at the same time heartwarming. The touching story of these four poor kids and their struggle to find a place where they belong is just charming.

There were times where I thought the book was a bit too long. I would think "Okay, okay we get it. Move on!" but then I'd hit another good patch and I would fall back in love with the story.

Definitely a book I would recommend. Not particularly difficult to read, just a bit long in some places. But it's a nice book that leaves you with a happy feeling. At least it did for me.

Book Review: Fun read!
Summary: 5 Stars

I picked up this book because the title sounded fun, and I'm always looking for books that my kids will like. It is a very fun read indeed, and it's a substantial length (nearly 500 pages) for a kid's book. It reminded me of dystopias such as Ayn Rand's Anthem, but it's at a level that kids can understand. It teaches kids that we are not simply born with bravery or courage, but that we become brave or courageous through the choices we make to do the right thing, even when it's scary or difficult. I would recommend this book to any kids (or adults) age 9 and up, although the 9 and 10 year olds would need to be pretty skilled readers. I can't wait to start book 2 in the series!

Book Review: 11 yr old's point of view
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was the greatest book I have ever read! It had adventure, humor, mystery, and lots more, in one book!
What I liked most about this book though was that it was all about kids. The kids in this book figured everything out themselves. Plus it shows that everyone has his or her gift, we all are different. It has a great story line and always has excitement coming around the corner. This book also has no bad lauguage and is appropriate for all ages. I know the size of this book and the small print is very intimidating, but if it wasn't this big then there woudn't be enough room for the adventure. I had a hard time putting the book down! I hope you'll read it!
